Ash Parish Council

Ash Parish Council Ash Parish Council, whose aim is to provide high quality, good value services. St.

The Parish of Ash, in Surrey, though quite small, is the most heavily populated of the rural parishes within the Borough of Guildford. It covers some four square miles in the extreme west of the Borough extending north to south along the river Blackwater which forms the Hampshire boundary with the towns of Aldershot and Farnborough immediately beyond. In times past Ash was a very sparsely populate

d parish on the southern edge of the Windsor Great Forest but in recent years has grown into a continuous residential area with a population that could shortly reach 18,000. The village of Ash is flanked on the south by Ash Green which reaches to the lower slopes of the Hog’s Back with residential areas extending to the north through Ash Wharf to Ash Vale. The river Blackwater forms a break in the built up areas to the west whilst, on the eastern side are many square miles of open heathland, including Ash Common, which are much used by the army for training purposes, although there is a restricted public access. Ash is exceptionally well served by rail with no fewer than three stations – Ash, Ash Vale and North Camp – located on different routes. Frequent services run to Aldershot, Guildford, Reading and London (Waterloo) with direct services to Gatwick and to Heathrow via the Woking coach link. By way of a change at Reading, Ash rail travellers have quick access to the Midlands, the north of England and Scotland on inter city routes. There are a number of historic buildings in Ash, including the 16th/17th century Hartshorn, Ash Manor, Lavender Cottage, Tudor House, Azor Place and Merryworth. Peter’s church virtually rebuilt in 1865 still retains Norman, 11th, 13th and 15th century areas of interest including the tiny Norman window in the north aisle. The parish is well served with leisure facilities for sport and recreation and these in the main are provided by the Ash Parish Council. There are four recreation grounds spread across the area and these provide public tennis courts at Carrington Recreation Ground and a football pitch with changing facilities at Harpers Recreation Ground and a skate board park at Coronation Gardens. A dual purpose sport centre is situated at the Ash Manor School which is available for the school and general public. The range of facilities there, include indoor tennis courts, and there is an adjacent gymnasium. One of the most pleasant leisure features of Ash is the recently restored Basingstoke Canal (1794) which meanders through the parish on its way from Basingstoke to join the River Wey Navigation near Byfleet, Surrey, linking it with the inland water network. The Parish is served by twelve parish councillors, representing three separate wards – Ash Wharf, Ash South and Ash Vale. There are six separately elected borough councillors to Guildford Borough Council, representing the three Wards and two elected county councillors who serve on Surrey County Council.

Road Closure Shawfield Road, Ash, GU12 6PE

Road Closure & Traffic Lights -Shawfield Road junction with Alexandra Road and Underwood Avenue, Ash for essential gas works

From Monday 08 June for a duration of approximately two weeks, SGN specialist contractors I&G Contractors Limited will be working on two sections of gas main located on Shawfield Road, Ash. These works are essential to ensure we can continue to maintain a safe and efficient gas supply to the area.

Due to the location of the gas pipes in the road and for everyone’s safety we will need to have road closures and traffic lights in place as follows:

Section one:

Working on Shawfield Road at the junction with Alexandra Road, the road will be in place

Section two:

Working across the junction Underwood Avenue with temporary traffic lights in operation

These closures will mean:

No through vehicle access past the closures in either direction – diversion routes will be in place

Vehicle access to properties located within the closure will be maintained, our site team will keep residents informed of access arrangements

Pedestrian and Cycle access through the closure will be maintained
Vehicles access to Underwood Avenue will be maintained

Buses will be affected – we’d advise passengers to contact their service provider for the latest update/changes to service

Bin collection days will remain unchanged unless you hear otherwise from your service provider

Bus routes will be affected – please contact your service provider for the latest updates/changes.

We understand how disruptive road closure are for the community, please be assured; we will be doing everything we can to complete these works as quickly and as safely as possible.

If you need to speak to us about these works, you can contact our Customer Service Team by email [email protected] or alternatively you can call them on 0800 912 1700, they will direct your enquiry to one of the team for response.

Council Update: New Chair and Vice-Chair Appointed

Following the Annual Meeting on 18 May, the Council is pleased to announce Councillor Michael Moriarty as the new Chair and Councillor John Tonks as Vice-Chair.

Cllr Moriarty succeeds Councillor Fiona White, and we thank her for three years of dedicated service. We also extend our thanks to Councillor Carla Morson, who steps down as Vice-Chair, for her valuable contribution.

The Council looks forward to working together under the new leadership to support our community and deliver for residents across the Parish.

Words from the New Chair of the Council
Speaking after his appointment, Councillor Moriarty said:

“It is truly an honour to have been selected for this role by my fellow councillors to take on this role, and I also wish to give thanks to Councillor Fiona White, who has stood down from the role, for her contribution and leadership of the council over the past three years.

Our biggest responsibility for us in a post-Local Government Reorganisation world will be to establish a sense of place and community for the Parish. Through the events we hold, our open spaces and allotments we operate, the charities we support, the Ash Centre, the Ash in Bloom competition, we must continue to back these and seek to grow them as well, as well as to further engage with our community groups, sports organisations and residents young and old and figure out exactly what they want out of where they live.”

Words from the New Vice-Chair of the Council
Councillor John Tonks also said:

“I’m really looking forward to supporting our new Chair and working together as a council to do the best we can for our community.”
