One of the largest inhabited and complete castles in England, Arundel Castle is situated in magnificent grounds overlooking the River Arun in West Sussex. Our story begins in 1067 and continues to the present day. Many of the original features such as the Norman Keep, medieval Gatehouse and Barbican survive. Between the 1870s and 1890s the house was almost completely rebuilt and the magnificent ar

chitecture in Gothic style is considered to be one of the great works of Victorian England. Learn from our friendly guides about the finely preserved interior with its fascinating furniture, tapestries and rare collection of paintings by renowned artists including Van Dyck, Gainsborough and Canaletto. Stroll through the tranquil grounds where you will discover inspiring gardens. Get involved in our historical events, learn about life in the past and cheer on your champion knight. Whilst you are here, visit Arundel's historic town centre with its museum, galleries, shops and restaurants.

Arundel Castle has stood above the town for nearly 1,000 years, although what you see today was built and rebuilt over many centuries.

The original motte dates from 1068, just two years after the Norman Conquest, with the stone Keep added in the 12th century. The Castle was subsequently extended and altered over hundreds of years, serving as both a defensive stronghold and a family home.

Much of the impressive Gothic architecture seen today is considerably later, dating from the extensive restoration undertaken by the 15th Duke of Norfolk in the late 19th century.

The Victorian Vine House is part of a much longer tradition of growing under glass at Arundel Castle.

By the 1870s, the Castle’s extensive kitchen gardens included Peach Houses, vineries and even pineapple pits, where varieties including Charlotte Rothschild and Black Antigua were grown.

The Vine House itself dates from the 1850s and was restored in 2000. Today it is home to grape vines, Chinese flat peaches and the Castle’s collection of pelargoniums.

Alongside it, the Tropical Glasshouse continues the tradition of growing plants that need a little more warmth than the Sussex weather can reliably provide – including delicious chillies.

In the great houses of Victorian England, a staircase was about far more than simply getting from one floor to another. It was an opportunity to impress.

The Grand Staircase at Arundel Castle was built as part of the major rebuilding of the Castle in the late 19th century, designed by architect Charles Alban Buckler for the 15th Duke of Norfolk. Fossil marble, heraldry, sculpture, historic tapestries - and a particularly impressive ceiling – all form part of its Gothic Revival design.

More than a century later, it still impresses castle visitors.

September has entered the gardens. 🌿

📣 Noise information for local residents 📣

Please be aware that this weekend is the Festival of History event, being held on Saturday, Sunday and Monday and there will be some noise.

Specifically, the louder guns will be fired between:

11.30am – 12noon
2pm – 2.30pm
3pm – 4pm

Additionally, there may be some noise during the historical demonstrations.

Additional safety measures will be in place throughout the weekend, taking into account the dry ground conditions.

⚔️ Our biggest event of the season is almost here!

This Bank Holiday weekend, Arundel Castle will come alive with 12,000 years of history for three spectacular days.

From Roman gladiators and Norman knights to medieval artillery, falconry, traditional crafts and thrilling combat demonstrations, the Festival of History brings together centuries of history right across the Castle grounds.

And there’s plenty to get involved with too. Try your hand at archery, axe throwing and crossbows, get up close to incredible historical displays and discover what life was really like through the ages.

If you’re looking for something brilliant to do over the Bank Holiday weekend, this is the one. 🏰⚔️
