Arlesey Town Council

Arlesey Town Council Information about the Town Council, its members, details of meetings, committees and services provided as well as information about the local area.

Arlesey is a small town situated in the county of Bedfordshire, with a population of over 5000 and extends for about 3 miles along the River Hiz valley. In historic times, Arlesey was a Royal Manor (Manor of Arleseybury) and a market town, once known as the most prosperous parish in the area and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. St Peters Church is situated at the Church End side of the town and

was built over 900 years ago by the monks of Waltham Abbey. Arlesey is a very friendly and welcoming community, with young and old working together to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. All communities are dependent on having people willing to work to improve things and Arlesey is fortunate in having a number of voluntary organisations and recreational facilities, all adding to the rich pattern of life. Arlesey has good transport links whether by road or rail. Details of these can be found in our transport section. Arlesey was given a significant boost to its development by the re-opening of the railway station. This was extensively refurbished and re-opened on 1st October 1988 and provides an excellent service to the larger local towns of Stevenage, Biggleswade and Sandy, as well as to London and Peterborough. The town benefits from a range of shops and community services, including a health centre, library, schools and recreational facilities. You can find more details of these by clicking on the links on the left of the page. Situated at the junction of House Lane and High Street, is the Town's War Memorial and is a reminder of all the brave men of Arlesey, who gave their lives during both World Wars. They are particularly remembered at the Memorial Service, held in November each year and at the annual Civic Service.

Can you help us add an element of protection to Arlesey’s Women’s Institute Hall by providing the community with a right to bid?

In addition to relisting The White Horse as an asset of community value (ACV), Council would also like to submit an application to Central Beds Council to nominate Arlesey’s WI Hall as an ACV.

We need to collate the same evidence for the W.I. hall. You can strengthen our application by emailing any of the following to [email protected]

• photographs/social media posts of events taking place at the W.I. hall for the last two years and any future Arlesey Community Events groups

• testimonials, letters of support and statements from residents who use the W.I hall e.g. do you have regular weekly / monthly catch ups with friends as your main social interaction / is the W.I. hall a vital resource to the elderly in terms of enabling them to get out and meet others / to parent groups for wellbeing / children’s groups for socialising etc

• have you held or planned regular events at the W.I hall? We need numbers who attend, who attends (i.e. local community, wider community) – e.g. parties, wedding celebrations etc. / regular fundraiser event/ quiz night etc.

• are you a local group who use the W.I. hall? How often do you meet here, how many people attend, what do you use the W.I. hall for e.g. a craft group/ hobby group/ yoga group etc

• other event publicity fliers/posters/social media posts – have there been Community events held at the W.I. hall during the year e.g. summer events, Christmas events,

• print media articles of events that have taken place at The White Horse. This will help the decision on whether the W.I. hall is eligible for inclusion in the List of Assets of Community Value.

We need your help!

Council would like to relist The White Horse as an asset of community value (ACV).

The Community Right to Bid was introduced under the Localism Act 2011, it gives local community groups such as parish councils, a right to nominate a building or other land for listing by the council as an Asset of Community Value (ACV). When a listed asset is to be sold, local community groups will have a chance to make a bid and buy it on the open market.

We need to gather as much evidence as possible from Arlesey residents to support and strengthen our application to Central Bedfordshire Council. We need to demonstrate how The White Horse furthers the social interest or social wellbeing of the Arlesey community.

We need Arlesey residents to support us by emailing any of the following to [email protected]

• photographs/social media posts of events taking place at The White Horse for the last two years and any future Arlesey Community Events groups

• testimonials, letters of support and statements from residents who use The White Horse e.g. do you have regular weekly / monthly catch ups with friends as your main social interaction / is The White Horse a vital resource to the elderly in terms of enabling them to get out and meet others e.g. meals together etc.

• have you held or planned regular events at The White Horse? We need numbers who attend, who attends (i.e. local community, wider community) – e.g. a darts group / regular fundraiser event/ quiz night etc.

• are you a local group who use The White Horse? How often do you meet here, how many people attend, what do you use The White Horse for e.g. a craft group/ hobby group/ socialising group etc

• other event publicity fliers/posters/social media posts – have there been Community events held at The White Horse during the year e.g. summer events, BBQ, Christmas events, watching significant sports such as Rugby matches, World Cup etc

• print media articles of events that have taken place at The White Horse. This will help the decision on whether The White Horse is eligible for inclusion in the List of Assets of Community Value.
