🚨 Volunteer Spotlight: Anabelle 🚨

Finishing off Volunteers’ Week is Anabelle ❤️ one of our most experienced and dedicated BLSAR volunteers.

Joining us back in 2016 after being inspired by a book containing details about search dog work, Anabelle has spent the last decade developing her skills and supporting the team in countless ways. From Search Technician and Team Leader to Medic, Swiftwater Rescue Technician, Instructor and Welfare Lead! Her impact within our team is incredible.

It's not just about qualifications. Anabelle is passionate about helping others grow, supporting new members, and building confidence across the team!

Anabelle says: “While the situations we attend can be incredibly difficult, we are a positive and motivated team. We can make a huge difference, even if quietly in the background.”And for Anabelle, it’s the people that make it special: “The skills you develop and the diverse, inspiring colleagues you work alongside make this an incredibly rewarding experience.”

👏 Thank you, Anabelle, for 10 years of commitment, compassion and dedication to helping others.

💭 Want to make a difference like Anabelle? We’re always looking for both operational and support volunteers, and if you can’t volunteer, you can still support our life‑saving work by donating. Every contribution helps us continue our searches.

Volunteers from Berkshire Lowland Search & Rescue were called out overnight by Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service to assist with our Water Rescue Capability.

Our water rescue teams use advanced sonar and underwater imaging technology to support emergency services - helping to locate missing persons, assess underwater hazards, and guide water rescue operations.

These specialist systems enable rapid, accurate searching beneath the surface, even in low visibility or challenging conditions, providing critical support during water-based incidents.

This is what our trained volunteers are equipped to do - day or night, in all conditions - when the call comes.

BLSAR is a charity, entirely volunteer-led, and call outs like this are only possible thanks to the continued support of our community.

Thank you to everyone who stands behind search and rescue 💚

Meet Gaz, our Land Training Officer, TRiM Practitioner and aspiring Team Leader 💙

After a 38-year military career as an officer and Chartered Mechanical Engineer (CEng), Gaz now runs his own outdoor training company, delivering adventurous activities and navigation instruction across the UK & overseas. His personal exploits have seen him trek as far afield as Nepal’s remote Upper Mustang 🌍

Gaz joined BLSAR three years ago after seeing a search team near his home, inspired by their “can do attitude” and professionalism.

As Land Training Officer, Gaz designs and delivers team exercises to build skills, teamwork and operational readiness. As a TRiM Practitioner, he also supports colleagues after difficult searches, highlighting the importance of mental wellbeing.

Gaz has recently started his Team Leader training journey, working towards leading searches, Gaz says "BLSAR is an incredible organisation with talented and inspirational operational and support team members, “One Team!” and describes the pride of helping find vulnerable missing people as hugely rewarding.

🚨 Volunteer Spotlight: Nicola 🚨

Meet Nicola, our Recruitment Officer and a valued member of our Welfare team.👏

Nicola first discovered BLSAR at a volunteer open day in October 2025 and like many, she “had no idea a search and rescue team even existed in Berkshire,” but was quickly inspired by the team’s work and jumped at the chance to get involved.

Since joining, she’s helped recruit a wide range of talented volunteers, from finance to project management, and says she’s been “amazed by the number of talented people willing to give their time to support the charity.”

Although still relatively new, Nicola says the welcome has been “incredible,” and seeing the team in action, treating vulnerable people with “kindness and compassion” has made her “really proud to be part of the team.”
Now also part of our Welfare team, she’s passionate about supporting fellow members when they need it most ❤️

Her message to anyone considering joining: “This isn’t an easy volunteer role… but what stands out most is the shared purpose… I’ve genuinely never met a kinder group of people.”

👏 Thank you, Nicola, for everything you do!

If you’ve ever felt the pull to do something meaningful, now is the time.

🚨 Volunteer Spotlight: Laurence 🚨

Today we’re celebrating Laurence and his inspiring journey with Berkshire Lowland Search and Rescue 👏

Laurence first qualified with the team in 2018 as a Search Technician, and since then has continued to grow his skills and commitment. Along the way, he became a Swift Water Rescue Technician, before putting in the time, effort, and training to recently qualify as a Team Leader this February.

Outside of volunteering, Laurence is the Co-Director of Wyvern Landscapes , balancing a demanding day job with his dedication to supporting others.

Maintaining these vital skills takes real commitment, and for Laurence, it’s all driven by a simple but powerful motivation: giving back to the community 💙

Congratulations on this fantastic achievement, Laurence, and thank you for everything you do!

Today marks the end of an era for BLSAR…

We’re saying goodbye to Toutley Depot, which has been our home for the last 4 years 👋

What was meant to be a temporary base for just 18 months ended up being so much more and we’re incredibly grateful for the time we’ve had there.

A huge thank you to Wokingham Borough Council for allowing us to stay for as long as we did, and we wish them every success with the site’s redevelopment.

But it’s not goodbye, it’s a new chapter 🙌

We’ve now moved into our new base at Unit 10 Space Business Centre Wokingham on Molly Millars Lane, while we continue working towards securing our forever home. Thank you to the team there for assisting our organisation.

With our focus now on finding a forever home, your support is crucial — every donation helps us stay operational and continue serving our community 💙
