On Friday at 00:45 both Antrim appliances were turned out to reports of an oil tank on fire in the Somerset Park area of the town. Due to difficulties with water supply in the area the unorthodox decision was made to deploy the PSNI water cannon based at Steeple nearby.

Although not directly involved in firefighting the water cannon supplied 9000 liters of water preventing the escalation of a very challenging situation for firefighters.

The fire was extinguished by appliances from Antrim, Ballymena and Glengormley together with the Command Support Unit.

Thankfully no casualties were reported and the fire was contained to one property with minor damage to an adjacent property and an outdoor unit used by a local charity.

We are grateful for the resources given from our colleagues at PSNI in what was a great example of joint agency working.

In the early hours of Friday morning, our colleagues from the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) responded to reports of a house fire in the Somerset Park area of Antrim.

Due to difficulties with the local water supply, the NIFRS Silver Commander requested assistance from the PSNI Water Cannon, which is based nearby.

Officers from Road Policing Unit, Steeple, quickly deployed the Water Cannon carrying 9,000 litres of water to support firefighters at the scene.

While the Water Cannon wasn’t used to tackle the fire directly, it played a vital role by supplying water to the fire service pumps, helping crews continue their firefighting efforts.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

A great example of emergency services working together when it matters most.

Well done everyone. A tough night for everyone

From 7pm – 11.59pm on Wednesday 10 June 2026, our Regional Control Centre received 82 emergency calls resulting in crews being mobilised to 33 incidents across Northern Ireland.

We responded to incidents across Belfast, Mallusk, Glengormley and Portadown, which included a vehicle fire, lorry fire, house fire, derelict building fire and industrial bin fire.

Firefighters from Glengormley, Westland, Springfield, Knock and Portadown Fire Stations attended the incidents and extinguished the fires.

Our crews also continued to respond to other emergencies including a road traffic collision in Bangor.

We would like to thank our Firefighters for their continued commitment and to our community for their ongoing support.

We have had a busy evening responding to a high volume of fire calls. Between 7pm and 12am, our Regional Control Centre have managed 256 calls resulting in attendance at 62 incidents.

The majority of these incidents were in the Greater Belfast Area where an additional 21 Fire Appliances from across Northern Ireland were required to meet demand.

We would like to recognise our personnel for their professionalism during a challenging period, and extend our appreciation to the community for their support in assisting our response.
