Angle Lifeboat RNLI

Angle Lifeboat RNLI Dedicated to saving lives at sea Angle Lifeboat station is one of 235 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland, run by the RNLI.

The crews are almost all volunteers - over 4500 (about 25 at Angle) of them, who give up their time to train, and to respond to pagers 24-hours a day in all weathers to help those in trouble on the sea. They do it because they enjoy it, their employers allow them to where they can, and their families (somehow) manage to put up with it!

5 shouts in the past week for Angle RNLI

At 8.43pm on thursday night, the crew were paged alongside Dale and Broadhaven Coastguard Rescue Teams and Coastguard Rescue Helicopter R387 to assist the police with a search for a missing person in the Milford Haven area.

The lifeboat and Y boat conducted through searches of the shoreline between Hakin and Hazelbeach. Whilst off Wear Spit, the crew were informed that the casualty had been located within Castle Pill.

Both boats stood by off Castle Pill whilst emergency services on scene worked to secure the casualty. With no further assistance required the crew were stood down and the lifeboat was back alongside her berth and readied for further service by 12.06am.

At 11.06pm on friday night, for the second time in 24hrs the crew were paged alongside Dale and St Govan’s Coastguard Rescue Teams to assist the police with a search for a high missing person in the Milford Haven area.

The lifeboat and Y boat conducted thorough searches of the shoreline between Gelliswick and Neyland before being stood down when the casualty was located safe and well by the police. The lifeboat was back alongside and ready for further service by 1.50am.

At 4.21am on saturday morning, for the third time in just over 24hrs and just 2 hours after returning from the previous shout the crew were paged alongside Dale and St Govan’s Coastguard Rescue Team to assist the police with a search for a missing person in the Milford Haven area.

The lifeboat and Y boat conducted intensive searches of the shoreline from Gelliswick to Neyland, before being stood down at 9.15am. The missing person was later located safe and well inland by the police.

At 9.08am on thursday morning the crew were paged to assist Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and St Govan’s Coastguard Rescue Team with the search for a dog that been lost over the cliff the night before at Pembroke Ferry.

The lifeboat launched and was soon on scene and commencing a search of the shoreline. Not long after, the crew located the dog on the shoreline.

The lifeboats inflatable Y boat was deployed and 2 crew members proceeded to recover the dog. With the dog taken onto the Y boat safe and well the crew made their way towards Warrior Way where the dog was landed ashore and left in the care of the Fire Service and Coastguard Officers to be handed back to its owners.

With no further assistance required the crew were stood down and the lifeboat was back alongside her berth and ready for further service by 10.30pm.

At 6.27pm on thursday evening shortly after launching on exercise, the crew were tasked to assist a 27ft yacht with 2 persons onboard taking on water off Thorn Island after their shaft seal failed.

The lifeboat was not too far away and was soon on scene and assessing the situation. Two crew members and the lifeboat’s salvage pump were transferred onboard to control the water ingress.

The lifeboat began escorting the vessel however with the water ingress continuing the yachts crew were requested to stop their engine in an attempt to reduce the water ingress.

A tow was passed and both vessels proceeded towards Neyland Marina. With the vessel now safely alongside at Neyland Marina and the owners making their own arrangements for a lift out, the lifeboat recovered both its crew members and returned to station.

The lifeboat was back alongside and readied for further service by 8.30pm.

Angle RNLI rescue sheep after cliff fall.

At 3:59pm on Wednesday the 6th of May the crew were tasked to provide safety cover to members of the public attempting to rescue two sheep at the base of the cliffs at Elegug Stacks.

The lifeboat launched at 4:12pm and began proceeding to the area. With public interest building and multiple members of the public gathering on the cliff above, St Govan’s and Tenby Coastguard Rescue Teams were also tasked to assist.

The lifeboat arrived on scene at 4:40pm and soon located a sheep at the base of the cliffs to the east of Elegug Stacks. Although the initial tasking was to provide safety cover, with members of the public planning to attempt a rescue it was soon decided that the best course of action would be for the lifeboat to recover the sheep to ensure that nobody put themselves at risk.

With benign sea conditions allowing for easy access to the shoreline, the lifeboats inflatable Y boat was deployed to head on to the rocky shoreline and attempt to rescue the sheep. The first was located and taken onboard the lifeboat, however after a thorough search of the area the second could not be located.

The sheep was transferred onto the All-Weather Lifeboat by the Y boat and taken the short distance to New Quay Beach at St Govan’s where members of the coastguard teams were waiting on the beach. Once ashore, the sheep was released to rejoin the rest of its flock in the fields above.

With no further assistance required the Y boat was recovered and the crew were stood down and returned to station. The lifeboat was back alongside her berth and readied for further service by 7:30pm.

The lifeboat launched shortly after and was soon on scene. Due to the depth of water the lifeboats inflatable Y boat was launched and two crew members made their way in to assess the situation.

With the yacht hard aground and beginning to list, the Y boat crew assisted the yachts crew to stream their anchor into deeper water and then set about evacuating both crew members from the vessel.

With nothing further that could be done the two crew members were transferred onto the All-Weather Lifeboat and taken back to the Port Authority Jetty where members of Dale Coastguard Rescue Team were waiting.

Understandably reluctant to leave his vessel, the crew assisted the owner in deploying an anchor. With no further assistance required and the vessels skipper content to await the flood tide the crew were stood down. The lifeboat was back alongside and ready for further service by 3pm.

13 successful pass-outs conclude an intensive week of assessments at Angle RNLI

Last week, 13 of our crew members undertook assessments to round off months of hard work and training to achieve their substantive roles.

Firstly, congratulations to crew members Anthony Thomas, Gareth Thomas and Nathen Houston on passing out as ALB Navigators after each completing a 4 hour assessment covering various search and rescue scenarios including a simulated tasking and search, radar and position fixing and paper chart navigation.

Secondly, congratulations to crew members Phil Jones, Tom Meehan, Nick Gale, Rob Davies, Finn Frost, James Findlay, Allen Price, Seymore Phillips, Graham Booth and Matt Nicholas (not pictured) on successfully passing their Tier 2 ALB Crew assessments.

Covering every aspect of crewing the lifeboat, including Man Overboard Recovery, Towing, Mooring and Berthing, Helming and Anchoring, the crew were put through their paces by an RNLI Assessor.

Well done to all 13 for their dedication and commitment to training over the past few months. These recent successes strengthen our ability to crew our lifeboat and demonstrate the continued success of the lifeboats operation from the town of Milford Haven.

Angle RNLI respond to Pan Pan call from 28ft yacht in difficulty in 42 knot winds and seas reaching 6 metres.

At 10:56am on Tuesday the 3rd of February, whilst afloat on a navigation passout in Dale Roads the crew overheard a broken Pan Pan call from a yacht west of Skokholm Island. Shortly after, the lifeboat was tasked by the coastguard to begin proceeding whilst they continued to gather details.

Whilst en route an update was passed to the crew that the vessel, a 28ft yacht with one person onboard was suffering engine failure, had blown out its sail and was also taking on water from an unknown location.

The lifeboat crew located the vessel around 3 miles west of Skokholm Island. After an assessment of the situation, and with the conditions too poor to put a crew member onboard the yacht the safest option was to take the vessel under tow. The crew swiftly set about rigging and passing a tow to the casualty vessel.

With a south easterly wind gusting 42 knots and a very rough sea state with waves of up to 6 metres, a slow tow was commenced towards Milford Haven.

However, shortly after commencing the tow the yachts skipper was thrown overboard by a large wave. Tethered via his safety harness, the skipper was now trailing alongside the vessel. The lifeboats crew immediately cut the tow and set about attempting to recover the casualty.

With the yachts skipper over the port side of the vessel and the tow rope fouling any attempting of boarding the starboard side, in difficult conditions a crew member was eventually placed onboard the yacht over its bow. The skippers safety harness was cut allowing him to drift clear of the vessel, and the crew onboard the lifeboat were then able to recover him from the water.

With the priority now being getting the casualty ashore, and the risk of attempting to tow the vessel too great, the lifeboats crew member was recovered from the vessel and the lifeboat began proceeding back towards Milford Haven.

On arrival back at Milford, the crew were met by Dale Coastguard Rescue Team who assisted in assessing the casualty and gathering the relevant details required.

With no further assistance required the crew were stood down and the lifeboat was readied for further service by 2:30pm.

Our thanks goes to The Lord Nelson Hotel for accommodating the casualty at short notice.

- Responding to, and authorising Tasking Requests from HM Coastguard.
- Carrying a pager and being on call as part of a prearranged rota system.

- Ensuring that all operational activities are carried out to maintain the lifeboat and all associated equipment in a constant state of readiness for launching on service.
- Forming a part of the stations Operations Team and attending monthly Operations Team meetings.

Angle RNLI responded to 100 service launches last year, and the Launch Authority played a pivotal role in each and every one.

First two shouts of 2026 for Angle RNLI

This morning at 11:17am the crew were tasked to investigate concern for a commercial fishing vessel in the Marloes area. A family member of the crew onboard had raised concern after they were unable to make contact with them.

The coastguard had been conducting investigations via VHF, mobile phones of the occupants and other local vessels in the area but with no success. With this, the crew were tasked to investigate and Dale Coastguard Rescue Team were also tasked to a vantage point at Marloes.

As the crew were proceeding to Marloes they were subsequently stood down when the fishing vessels crew made contact with the coastguard and confirmed that all was well onboard. With no further assistance required the lifeboat was stood down and was back alongside her berth and readied for further service by 12:30pm.

The day before, at 1:57am the crew were tasked to assist the police after a vehicle was found abandoned on the Cleddau Bridge with the engine still running. With concern for the vehicle’s occupants, the crew were tasked to conduct a search of the area.

Dale and St Govan’s CRTs were also tasked to search the bridge and shoreline, and the police were on scene with their drone unit.

The lifeboat was soon on scene and began a search of the immediate area, before proceeding to search with the flooding tide as far as Lawrenny. With nothing found, the crew began a reciprocal search back towards the bridge.

As the crew neared the end of their search, an update was received that the vehicles occupant was located safe and well. With this, the lifeboat was stood down and she was back alongside her berth and readied for further service by 4:30am.
