A grant from Alnwick Town Council has funded two groups that support local people living with dementia.

HospiceCare North Northumberland host the Alnwick Dementia Café and the Alnwick Dementia Walking Football group weekly at the Lindisfarne Centre and the £1500 grant will cover their room hire for the next year.

The Council’s Governance and Community Engagement committee voted unanimously to support the grant application and committee chair Cllr Lynda Wearn is seen presenting the cheque along with colleagues Cllr Alan Symmonds (vice-chair) and Cllr Geoff Watson (Mayor).

Lynda commented: “These two groups run by the Hospice’s dementia care team provide an invaluable opportunity for people who live in the Alnwick area, to socialise & spend time with others who are living with Dementia and their carers/relatives. The benefits of the groups cannot be underestimated as people living with dementia can often experience loneliness & social isolation.”

HospiceCare dementia support worker Sam Penberthy and dementia nurse Gill Locke accepted the grant at the Dementia Café. Gill added “We are so grateful for this donation. It means that we can focus our resources into providing the best support and run groups free of charge. I think the smiles on everyone’s faces shows how appreciative we are.”

Alnwick Dementia Café – known as ‘Reet Canny Cuppa’ – takes place 1.30-3.30 every Thursday at the Lindisfarne Centre, Alnwick. Alnwick Dementia Walking Football – takes place 10.30-11.30 every Thursday at the Lindisfarne Centre, Alnwick.

Take a trip down memory lane or amaze your younger relatives as the Bailiffgate Museum hosts it's summer exhibition "Ration Books to Moon Landings"

This display will take visitors back to the 1950s and 60s; two decades of major social change. In 1950 the aftermath of the Second World War was still being felt. Food rationing had not yet ended – if you wanted egg and bacon an adult could only buy 1 egg and 4 ounces of bacon each week! Hardly any families had television and for those who had there was only one black and white channel -BBC).

However, there were 1.4 billion cinema attendances every year. By 1970 there was a TV in almost every home with three channels of colour TV to watch and many cinemas were closing.

Our exhibition deals with these and many other changes. How the newly created NHS contributed to longer life expectancy and how slum clearance and new housing meant that outdoor loos and tin baths were becoming a thing of the past. While rail services to Alnwick were being cut, a growing number of families had cars which widened their horizons. In contrast to today people still shopped on the High Street and visitors can see a range of colourful adverts for local businesses.

Wherever possible the exhibition draws on objects and images from our collection to illustrate the period. It will display changes in women’s fashion from the full skirts of the 50s to the miniskirts of the 60s by displaying vintage items from our extensive collection.

For some visitors the exhibition will bring back memories of their childhood, for others it will provide a picture of a world where people seemed to manage very well without accessing the internet, sending texts and emails and streaming numerous channels of television.

Jean Humphrys, Chair at Bailiffgate says “This exhibition is an opportunity to reminisce and reflect on how much and how quickly life has changed over the years. It’s a testament to the impact ingenuity and innovation have had on our daily lives.”

Bailiffgate Museum & Gallery "Ration Books to Moon Landings" between 2nd June 2026 and 30th August 2026.

Opening Hours Tue- Sat 10am-4pm, Sun- 11am-4pm

Have you seen The Pinfold?

This little garden In the centre of Alnwick offers a wonderful splash of colour at this time of year and a space where you can sit and watch the world go by…

In 2018 Alnwick in Bloom started developing the area as a small triangular shaped informal garden that offers disabled and pushchair access.

Originally The Pinfold’s purpose was to hold any escaped animals when the market was held in town and before the Bloom team stepped in it was a storage area.

The Alnwick in Bloom team have created a self-sustainable all-season garden where currently alliums, poppies and iris are the main attraction.

Earlier in the year hellebores, snowdrops and tulips catch the eye as well as two winter-flowering cherries and a lime tree planted by Magnus Magnusson in 1984.

If you happen to be in the Green Batt/Hotspur Street area of town, why not take a few moments to relax on the bench (provided by Alnwick Town Council) and enjoy this little corner of loveliness!

An Alnwick Town Council Mayor’s Civic Award has been presented to a Shilbottle charitable organisation that supports local vulnerable families.

Scarlett’s Helping Hand was founded by Ashleigh Duke, her husband Benjamin and their daughter Scarlett in 2020, in response to families struggling with Christmas after the Covid lockdowns.

Since then, they have distributed thousands of donations such as emergency food parcels, baby items and household essentials.

Mayor Councillor Geoff Watson is seen presenting the award to Ashleigh and Scarlett, now age 12. Cllr Watson said “It was a pleasure to meet Ashleigh, Benjamin and Scarlett and hear how their efforts that began during the pandemic have continued to this day with support from many local businesses and individuals. This award is well-deserved.”

In return Scarlett, on behalf of her family, thanked the Mayor for the award and the recognition of the work that they do.
