Army Sport Supporting British Army Sport activities for serving personnel

WHY SPORT MATTERS
Sport prepares soldiers for operations by enhancing physical and mental fitness, resilience, leadership, and teamwork. It fosters cohesion, pride, humility, the ability to thrive under pressure and the courage to overcome fear. Sport sharpens the competitive edge and inspires a will to win that enables us to meet our core purpose, to protect the nation by being ready to fight an

d win wars on land. Sport contributes to the ‘Offer’ to our people; plays an important part in Army life, including recruiting and retention; and can provide excellent public visibility of the Army. Authorised sport is a Condition of Service with duty status and is a core activity that cannot be considered discretionary.

Today marks one year of partnership between Loughborough Sport and Army Sport.

Reflecting on this first year, Major General (Retd) Darrell Amison CBE, Chief Executive of Army Sport remarked:
‘The first year of Army Sport’s relationship with Loughborough University has witnessed significant activity including use of Loughborough’s world class sporting facilities by the Army Athletics Association; Army Strongman and Strongwoman; Army Powerlifting Union; Army Cricket Association and the Army Aquatics Union. I’m particularly grateful for Loughborough University’s willingness to host a recent Army Athletics training camp at very short notice following the understandable cancellation of their scheduled camp in Cyprus. The feedback received from athletes was wholly positive. I must also thank the Army’s Land Warfare Centre for delivering medical casualty simulation training to 15 of the University’s sports physios. By so doing, they’ve enhanced Loughborough’s medical response capability.

Visits to Loughborough’s campus have also strengthened relationships between Army Sport executive staff and the Director of Sport’s team at Loughborough. Looking ahead, we envisage further growth in the use of Loughborough’s facilities by our sports teams, and the potential for collaboration on matters of mutual interest such as women in sport and human performance optimisation. Support to coaching and coach development remains another promising area, as does support to Loughborough’s Sports Department leadership team. So, following a successful first year, we have much to build upon and look forward to.’

Louise Gear, Director of Sport at Loughborough University, added:
‘As we mark the first anniversary of this partnership, it’s fantastic to see the British Army increasingly making full use of our campus sporting facilities, and we have enjoyed hosting events such as powerlifting, waterpolo and cricket. What began as a shared vision has developed into a strong, practical relationship. We’re proud of what’s been achieved so far and are excited to build on this solid foundation in the years ahead.’

Thank you to everyone involved in making the first year of this partnership such a success.

Delighted to share the exceptional results from our ASHPP athletes, Cpl Paige Atwell and Cpl Rhys Calland, at Europe’s Strongest Man and Woman last weekend on the 6th June 2026 — one of the highest level tested strength competitions globally.

Cpl Rhys Calland secured 1st place in the Male Opens, outperforming a former World Champion and multiple world record holder. His consistency across all events earned him the title of Europe’s Strongest Man, and he now progresses to the World Championships (21–23 Aug).

Cpl Paige Atwell achieved an impressive 4th place in the Female U82kg, despite typically competing in the U73/75kg categories. She delivered personal bests across the board against heavier opposition. We await confirmation on her Worlds qualification, which is looking highly likely.

Outstanding performances from two exceptional athletes representing the programme at the highest level.

We are proud to launch the first Army Women in Sport Guide — a resource designed to provide insight, guidance, and practical support to help tackle barriers and promote opportunities for women participating in Army sport.

Developed following Army Sport’s 2024 study into the barriers and enablers influencing women’s involvement in sport, the guide includes recommendations, education, and contributions from Defence experts to support soldiers and commanders across the Army.

Sport plays a vital role in operational effectiveness, teamwork, wellbeing, and personal development — and ensuring equal opportunity to participate has never been more important.

We encourage all soldiers and commanders, irrespective of gender, to read and share the guide.

Yesterday, The Land Medical Training Centre (LMTC) delivered casualty simulation training to the sports coaches at Loughborough University, helping to strengthen medical response to sporting incidents.

The engagement from all 15 physios was outstanding throughout the day as they worked through a range of emergency scenarios including seizures, anaphylaxis, pelvic and femur fractures, spontaneous and tension pneumothorax.

In the afternoon, they focused on C-spine injury management, enabling the full team to work together in realistic, high-pressure situations. Great teamwork and excellent participation from everyone involved.
