🛠️ Fencing Down, Safety Up at the Bike Pond! A huge thank you to our incredible team of volunteers who spent a lovely morning removing the old, decrepit fence from around the 'bike pond' in the Meadow. The fence no longer served a purpose and had become a real hazard to our conservation grazing cattle, so clearing it out makes the area much safer for them.

We didn't take it all away! A few of the old wooden posts were left in situ to act as perfect natural perches for our local birds.

Our volunteers are the backbone of Tice's Meadow. Thank you for keeping our wildlife and livestock safe! 🙌 Join in on our next volunteer day, Friday 18th September - see pinned poster for details.

Start of the Autumn work party season, saw 8 volunteers helping the Surrey CC ranger to clear willow from the reedbeds around the silt pond. Further work is needed to thin the willows along the eastern shore to open up view points and help improve airflow across the pond.

A Whinchat was reported today. First of the year and the 117th bird species reported within the recording area this year.

Since 2005, Whinchat have been recorded every year on their return migration back to winter in central and southern Africa.

Birds breed in upland areas of northern and western Britain with a few in Ireland.

A Wheatear was reported this afternoon, the first of the return migration.
Since 2007, Wheatear have been recorded every year on their return migration back to winter in central Africa.

They breed mainly in western and northern Britain and western Ireland, although smaller numbers do breed in southern and eastern England.

Six TMBG volunteers and 12 willing workers from Surrey Choices braved the heatwave and cleared two areas of intrusive thistle from the main meadow. Although a great pollen source, if left unchecked, thistle does tend to dominate and suppress other plants that we are trying to encourage within the site. Still lots of butterflies seen today but due to the drought hardly any bees or damselflies.

A quick reminder that the Tice's Meadow Open Day is happening this Saturday!

Run by Surrey County Council in partnership with the Tice's Meadow Bird Group/Friends of Tice's Meadow, the event starts at 10:00am and promises a fantastic day out for all ages.

There's plenty to enjoy, including:
🌿 Bird ringing demonstrations
🦅 Bird walk
🪲 Bug hunt
🦋 Butterfly walk
💧 River dipping demonstration
🏕️ Informative gazebo displays

And don't miss the chance to meet our two show sheep, Dibby and Lenny, who can't wait to say hello!

Bring the whole family along for a fun, educational day exploring the wonderful wildlife and nature at Tice's Meadow. We look forward to seeing you there!
