'An orphan with no prospects, Charlie Matters’ life has always been a fight for survival. He emerged miraculously unscathed from the Blitz, but there’s no telling when the next bomb will fall, or whether it will be the one to end his life.

Molly Wakefield’s dreams of a joyful homecoming are all she’s had to hold on to after being evacuated to the countryside five years ago. But when she finally returns, Molly faces a London changed beyond recognition, and the devastating news that neither of her parents are there.

Charlie’s and Molly’s paths converge at The Book Keep, where they find an unexpected ally and protector in the bookshop’s owner, widower Ignatius Oliver. But the trio’s newfound peace is jeopardized as past secrets catch up with them. Can they help one another survive this turbulent time? Or will they be ripped apart from the last remaining people they hold dear?'

Tomorrow marks the start of the Empathy Day Festival – a national initiative taking place from 4–11 June. This annual event aims to inspire children to learn more about empathy and strive to build a better world for everyone.

Picking up a book can help young people step into the lives of different characters, experiencing their joy, grief and fears. Reading teaches an understanding for others, an ability to listen before reacting and to pause before judging.

As a starting point, we've highlighted some titles that can be found at but lots more can be found on the online catalogue and via BorrowBox:

Come along to Story Time, tomorrow at 11:00, to hear the Story of the Month for June - We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury.

You can also pick up a copy within and follow the family's excitement as they wade through the grass, splash through the river and squelch through the mud in search of a bear. What a surprise awaits them in the cave on the other side of the dark forest!

Further copies can also be found via the online catalogue: https://hampshire.spydus.co.uk/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/ENQ/WPAC/BIBENQ?ENTRY1_NAME=TI&ENTRY1=we%27re%20going%20on%20a%20bear%20hunt&ENTRY1_TYPE=K&ENTRY2_NAME=AU&ENTRY2=michael%20rosen&ENTRY2_TYPE=K&NRECS=20&SORTS=HBT.SOVR

Our author of the month has been very popular this month, with only a handful of books left on our display!

Len Deighton was a prolific British author, best known for his gritty and realistic Cold War Spy stories. Deighton redefined the genre in the 1960s and introduced us to a new kind of spy: working-class, cynical and very tough... and brilliantly portrayed by Michael Caine when the books became films. Being a spy suddenly became very cool indeed!
