The number of pubs has fallen from around 69,000 to around 45,000 at the end of 2024. A recent report suggested there could be as few as 10,000 pubs by 2040.
Beer duty now stands at approximately £0.49 per pint, with VAT (at 20%) totalling £0.80. The combined effect means that around 32% or £1.52 of a £4.80 pint is made up of tax.
Rachel Reeves imposed further tax increases on pubs in the November 2025 Budget — pubs faced a 76% business rate increase. Over three years, an average pub would have paid an extra £12,900.

Our Commitment

British pubs are integral to our community life and the beating hearts of villages, towns and high streets across our United Kingdom. Reform treasures the national institution that is our pubs and supports hardworking publicans up and down the country.
The Conservatives, and now Labour, have facilitated the closure of thousands of pubs over the last decade. Any contrition they show is false.
A Reform Government will stop the uniparty's attacks on our way of life and take immediate action to end the pubs crisis. Only Reform will save our pubs.

Reform UK this week pledged to slash VAT, business rates, the National Insurance tax hike, beer duty and regulation to give a major boost to local pubs like this one

Why?

Because it’s about the second word in our motto. ‘Family, Community, Country’

Without the local pub, community life falls apart.

💷 £4.7 MILLION FOR HIM.
🚫 NO VOTE FOR YOU.

We’re told local elections are being cancelled across the country, including here in Lancashire, because they’re too expensive during reorganisation.

Yet Andy Burnham is happy to spend £4.7 MILLION of taxpayer money on a mayoral by-election to pursue his own political ambitions.

Funny how the money’s there when it suits them.

Local residents lose their vote.
Councillors avoid accountability.
Democracy gets “paused”.

But personal projects?
Cheque signed. No questions asked.

This was never about cost.
It was about control.

£4.7m for one politician.
Nothing for your local vote.

People see this for what it is, and they’re fed up.

‼️Local Voters Silenced by Labour — But £5m is Ok for a Mayor Election Is Fine‼️

The hypocrisy is glaring. Labour is postponing local elections due to ‘LGR costs’, claiming it’s too expensive. Yet if Andy Burnham returns to Westminster, a mayoral election would still go ahead at an estimated £5 million to the taxpayer!

So democracy is ‘too costly’ for local voters, but not for high-profile political positions. Labour are effectively telling voters their voices don’t matter unless it benefits the party. That’s not democracy — it’s manipulation.
