CALLOUT ๐Ÿ“Ÿ : 4/9/26

Abersoch RNLI was tasked to a man overboard following a Mayday call from a sailing yacht racing off Gimlet Rock, Pwllheli.

The volunteer crew were paged at 2.32pm, launched within 11 minutes and were on scene by 2.52pm.

The casualty, an adult male, had already been successfully recovered from the water by the yachtโ€™s crew. Two lifeboat crew went aboard to assess him and found him to be safe and well.

The lifeboat escorted the yacht back to Pwllheli Marina, where Abersoch Coastguard Rescue Team took over the casualtyโ€™s care before he was taken by ambulance to Ysbyty Gwynedd for further checks.

Volunteer Helm Phill Wood said:
โ€œThe crew of the casualty vessel were all wearing the correct clothing and lifejackets. They conducted a very successful man overboard procedure to recover the casualty, a testament to their learning and knowledge for a safe outcome for all under pressure.

โ€œMaking the Mayday call was the right thing to do.โ€

The lifeboat returned to station at 3.48pm and was left ready for service.

A good reminder of the importance of knowing and practising your man overboard procedure, wearing the correct equipment and knowing how to call for help.

โ€ผ๏ธ If you get into difficulty or spot someone else in trouble, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

While many were wrapping presents and prepping for Christmas, our volunteer crew were on callโ€ฆ..as always ๐Ÿ›Ÿ

On Sunday 21 December, Abersoch RNLI volunteer crew were paged at 11.10am following a report to HM Coastguard of an object floating off Carreg y Defaid.

The Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat launched at 11.22am, arriving on scene within five minutes. Guided by Abersoch Coastguard Rescue Team, the crew located the object, which was identified as an all-in-one thermal fishing/deck suit.

Phill Wood, Abersoch RNLI volunteer helm, said:
โ€œThis was a false alarm with good intent. The fisherman absolutely did the right thing by calling the Coastguard.โ€

Our volunteer crew are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, Christmas week included.

๐Ÿ’› If they can respond at any time, in any conditions, you can brave a quick run into the sea on New Yearโ€™s Day ๐Ÿ‘

The Abersoch RNLI New Yearโ€™s Day Dip is one of our most important fundraisers of the year and a brilliant way to start 2026 supporting the people who are always there, responding to any callโ€ฆโ€ฆ.
