Le Rêve underwent a complete renaissance over an 18 month period in 2011-12, when we restored the limestone to its original honey tones and sympathetically renovated the interior, creating a warm inviting space full of traditional Provençal charm and character. Forged ironwork, stone features, tiled floors, exposed beams and traditional shutters combined with high quality furnishings and fittings

create a lovely warm ambient environment. Spread over several levels the house is warm in winter, with full central heating and cool in summer due to reverse cycle split air conditioning in the lounge/dining area and top bedroom and double glazing of windows and French doors throughout. It is just a short stroll down the paved pedestrianised street to the market square or “Place aux Herbes”, the Ducal palace and the many attractive boutiques, cafés and restaurants and the local boulangeries (bakeries) and pâtisseries (cake & pastry shops). Searching for the missing link!
Nîmes is the closest city to Uzès and has been closely associated ever since the Romans arrived and demonstrated their incredible engineering skills. Water from a spring in Uzès which still supplies Uzès today - went via the Roman Pont du Gard aqueduc to the Nîmes Castellum where 10 lead pipes distributed it.
I had been meaning to look for the Castellum long ago and finally decided it was time! It's in a quiet suburban part of Nîmes in a narrow 1 way street - easy to miss but if only it could talk!
Nîmes itself has a lovely elegance to its historic centre and grand boulevards, but often visitors get a different impression if they come via the commercial or industrial centres. Excellent shopping - shoes, clothes, jewellery etc. and of course plenty of places to eat. Parking is easy in underground car parks but the best way to visit is catching a bus from Uzès for 1.50 euro - a bargain! and walking straight from the railway station to the Roman arena, Maison Carré and historic centre.

Visited one of my favourite places - Aix-en-Provence as it has been several years since my last visit. Drove to Avignon and took the train to Marseille and then another to Aix city centre. Renowned for its association with the post - Impressionist artist Paul Cézanne, its architecture, many high end shops and its wide café lined boulevard Cours Mirabeau it's an easy place to wander through and get slightly lost!
One change since my last visit was the glass fronted Apple store opposite the Fontaine de la Rotonde - had me thinking about Federation Square in Melbourne (before I saw that their application has been rejected.)
Many Cézanne associated things to do usually but not in March and early April! His art studio was being renovated and recent painting exhibition had just finished. Tourism office does do tours but minimum numbers apply. My hotel bore his name so not all was lost!

After leaving Arles it's only a short drive of under 30 minutes to the Camargue - a regional park and nature reserve of more than 820 square kms consisting of a series of lagoons and marsh wetlands cut off from the Mediterranean sea by sand bars. Seaside Saintes-Maries de la Mer is close by with its popular beaches, shops and its famous church with very distinctive architecture and much historical influence from Spanish gypsies settling in the area.

Sensational weather to wander around stunning Arles with its Roman links and of course still on the trail of Vincent van Gogh. Always tricks me how the arena suddenly appears as you meander through the narrow streets of tall townhouses. Actually went to a bullfight in the Roman arena many years ago with 2 friends with whom I was backpacking around Europe. Sitting right at the very top on the stones jutting out it was an amazing gladiatorial type atmosphere but have had no desire to go again! Fortunately attitudes have changed and conducted differently now. Place du Forum just near where I stayed very famous Café Terrasse made famous by van Gogh's painting "Café Terrace at Night" with statue of Frederic Mistral and Grand Hotel Nord-Pinus of Picasso, Christian LaCroix and Hemingway fame opposite.

On the trail of Vincent Van Gogh! It's hard not to think of him when you visit towns close to Uzès where he spent important phases of his painting evolution. Arles and the St. Rémy de Provence's Saint-Paul de Mausole psychiatric hospital in particular where he spent a year prior to his death in 1890. Les Baux de Provence is honouring his life works and his study of Japanese art in a superb Sound and Light show of 3D and animation technology "Les carrières et lumières" just 200 metres away from the ascent to the perched village. A must see!
along with visiting Saint-Paul de Mausole and visiting his actual room and imagining how the garden and surrounding countryside looked in his days there.
