Eurocorps

Eurocorps Official page of Eurocorps. A Force for the EU and NATO Headquarters Eurocorps was founded in 1992 and declared operational in November 1995.

The spectrum of possible missions for Eurocorps covers all types of operations: disaster relief, humanitarian aid, security assistance, low intensity conflicts, peace keeping, medium intensity conflicts, peace restoring and enforcing up to high intensity conflicts. The Eurocorps command posts are capable of commanding multiple battalions, brigades, divisions and army corps level troops. These capa

cities are available for the security and defense needs of the European Union, NATO, the UN, the OSCE or the framework nations. The founding fathers intention was realized as Eurocorps was available for crisis response operations. The following years Eurocorps' presence at missions in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo and Afghanistan have proven the operational qualities of this multinational unit. NATO evaluated Eurocorps as an excellent headquarters capable of mastering difficult missions. All these missions make of Eurocorps one of the most deployed headquarters in Europe. The troop contribution nations are Eurocorps' framework nations. The contribution of the framework nations will always depend on the specific needs of the mission. The units foreseen under Eurocorps command are earmarked but stay in their respective country. However they train together with HQ Eurocorps. After a transfer of authority they can be placed under operational command in case of an engagement.

After seeing how the Élysée Treaty laid the foundations for joint defense, in this post we explore how that alliance took the decisive step toward multinational military cooperation with the Eurocorps.

The story of European defense took a monumental step forward through Franco-German cooperation. What began as a historic handshake evolved into the ultimate model of multinational military synergy.

As a Franco-German Army Corps with a truly European character, Eurocorps represents a major milestone in the evolution of multinational military cooperation.

The creation of the Franco-German Brigade was an important step in strengthening European defence cooperation, while the establishment of Eurocorps took this cooperation to a broader multinational level.

How a 1963 Treaty Helped Lay the Foundation for European Defense — and Paved the Way for Eurocorps

The Élysée Treaty, signed in 1963 by Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer, is widely known as a milestone in Franco-German reconciliation.

But its significance went beyond diplomacy. By establishing closer cooperation between France and Germany in foreign affairs and defense, it helped lay the groundwork for deeper European defense cooperation.

Here is how a treaty signed more than 60 years ago helped shape European defense:

• A Framework for Defense Cooperation: The treaty called on France and Germany to bring their strategic and tactical doctrines closer together, paving the way for increasingly structured military cooperation.

• The Franco-German Brigade: Established in 1989, the brigade turned bilateral cooperation into a concrete multinational military formation, with French and German soldiers serving within a shared command structure.

• The Creation of Eurocorps: In 1992, François Mitterrand and Helmut Kohl took cooperation a step further by deciding to establish Eurocorps. The Franco-German Brigade was subsequently placed under Eurocorps command. Other countries later joined, transforming what began as a Franco-German initiative into a broader multinational structure.

• From Cooperation to Deployment: Over the decades, Eurocorps has evolved into a multinational headquarters capable of supporting operations and missions within NATO and EU frameworks.

From reconciliation to military integration, the Élysée Treaty helped set in motion a process of cooperation that continues to shape European defense today.
