How can memory, history and culture serve as active tools to combat antigypsyism and advance the inclusion of Roma and Travellers across Europe?

Co‑organised with the Hellenic Parliament and the Greek delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, this conference brought together parliamentarians, historians, memorial institutions, cultural organisations, Roma activists and civil society representatives.

🔎 Discussions focused on:
▪️ Memory as resistance – strengthening education and commemoration of Roma and Traveller history.
▪️ Reclaiming the narrative – supporting Roma voices in culture to challenge stereotypes and hate speech.
▪️ From awareness to action – translating remembrance into concrete policies and inclusion strategies.

🎯 The outcomes will support ongoing efforts to turn remembrance into meaningful action for inclusion, equality and human dignity.

On 8 June 2026, the Permanent Group on Inclusion of the Roma of the EESC - European Economic and Social Committee is hosting a public hearing on “𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆: 𝗥𝗼𝗺𝗮 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲.”

Bringing together policy-makers and civil society, the discussion will highlight the vital role of Roma culture within Europe’s shared identity and explore how to strengthen its visibility in culture, media, and education.

We are happy to contribute to the debate, in line with the priorities of the Strategy for Roma and Traveller Inclusion (2026 - 2030).

🇪🇺 Statement from Georgios Stamatis, Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Rapporteur on Roma and Travellers, on International Romani Resistance Day.

On May 16, we commemorate International Romani Resistance Day, honoring the extraordinary bravery of Roma and Sinti prisoners who revolted against N**i SS guards at Auschwitz-Birkenau on this day in 1944.

​Armed only with sticks, stones, and human dignity, their uprising delayed the liquidation of the camp—standing as a powerful, yet often overlooked, symbol of resistance against N**i barbarity.

🔹️​As the General Rapporteur on Roma and Travellers, I emphasise our shared responsibility to ensure the history of the Roma Holocaust and these acts of defiance are recognised across Europe.

​We must remain firmly committed to:
▪️​Visibility: Embedding Roma history, culture, and memory into our educational systems and public institutions.
▪️​Action: Using the memory of this outstanding courage to fuel our ongoing fight against modern-day antigypsyism, discrimination, and exclusion.

​Preserving this memory is vital to ensuring such atrocities are never repeated again.

🚀 Apply now: 2026 Democracy Hackathon
- 𝗛𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆! -

The Hackathon will bring together 80 participants from the 46 member states of the Council of Europe to co-create practical, technology-driven solutions to combat hate speech in online spaces.

The Council of Europe is looking for interdisciplinary teams of 3 to 4 people combining:
• one technologist
• one designer or a front-end developer
• one democracy expert

Organised as a milestone of the New Democratic Pact for Europe consultation, and in synergy with No Hate Speech Week, the Hackathon will take place from 17 to 19 June, under the auspices of the Monaco Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

📣 New report launched | 𝗥𝗼𝗺𝗮 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅 (𝗥𝗜𝗣𝗘)

We supported ERGO Network in developing Roma Inclusion, Participation & Equality Index ( ), a new comparative report assessing how 20 Council of Europe member states are translating Roma rights standards into practice (2024–2025).

Presented during in Brussels, the report offers a clear, evidence-based snapshot of progress (and persistent gaps) across , , and .

While national Roma strategies are now widespread, the findings reveal a continued gap between political commitments and real change on the ground, including weak funding, limited accountability and insufficient participation of Roma communities.

As we conclude "Opre Roma!" Month 2026 at Council of Europe, we celebrate close to 3️⃣0️⃣ major events that brought together activists, governments, and artists across Europe.
