At the 5th OMCL Network Symposium on falsified and illegal medicines (3-4 June, Prague), co-organised by the State Institute for Drug Control (SÚKL - Státní ústav pro kontrolu léčiv) and the EDQM, experts in this field reaffirmed their commitment to combating this criminal activity through coordinated action, robust laboratory testing, shared expertise and specialised law enforcement.

The Joint EDQM–INFARMED, I.P. Symposium (5–6 May, Lisbon) was a great success, bringing together nearly 200 experts, speakers, and participants from more than 30 countries in this hybrid event. A warm thank you to all contributors!

A clear message emerged from this event: safeguarding public health is a shared responsibility, requiring close co-operation between national authorities, international organisations and all stakeholders.

Over two days, participants engaged with key stakeholders committed to advancing the safe and appropriate use of medicines and promoting patient-centred care.

When medicines are ordered online from another country, who should be responsible for ensuring patient safety?

The Council of Europe’s Recommendation on the remote and online provision of medicines highlights that when medicines are supplied across borders, responsibilities, rules and safeguards must be clear and understood by all involved.

It calls for strong co‑operation and collaboration between member states, so that the same high standards of patient safety, quality and public health protection apply wherever medicines are provided.
