OPERATION DEMOCRACY

Shortly after World War II, inspired by Lt. Colonel Augustin S. Hart Jr. of the 82nd Airborne and Martha Breasted of Locust Valley, “Operation Democracy” was created to support war-torn communities in France. While the Marshall Plan rebuilt Europe on a national level, Operation Democracy focused on direct, grassroots humanitarian aid by connecting Locust Valley with Sainte-Mère-Église, the first town liberated by the 82nd Airborne. Residents sent clothing, books, toys, and supplies, forming a lifelong bond of friendship and gratitude. Inspired by this relationship, President Dwight D. Eisenhower later launched Sister Cities International in 1956, based on the belief that lasting peace begins through connections between ordinary people.

Today, the goals of Operation Democracy remain the same: to strengthen the historic friendship between France and the United States through educational programs focused on freedom, democracy, and ethical leadership; to encourage every citizen to act as a thoughtful ambassador and diplomat; and to honor our veterans with a promise to never forget their sacrifice.

On April 14th, Rep. Tom Suozzi (NY-03) spoke to the House of Representatives in recognition of our non-partisan project “Flags for Freedom®” which builds connections between generations and honors the values of democracy.

AMIS DES VÉTÉRANS AMÉRICAINS - AVA

L’association des Amis des Vétérans Américains (AVA) et Pour l’Amitié Franco-Américaine est la première association créée en France pour honorer et accueillir nos libérateurs, les parachutistes américains du débarquement de Normandie en 1944. Depuis sa création, elle organise de multiples célébrations, inaugurations, banquets de l’amitié, invitations des américains dans les familles françaises, etc.

Les AVA ont réalisé le site Mémorial de La Fière avec l’impressionnante statue dite « Iron Mike » (réplique de celle située au camp d’entrainement de Fort Bragg aux Etats-Unis) et ils en assurent la gestion. Il s’agit d’un des sites les plus significatifs de la Bataille de Normandie.

L’association est uniquement composée de membres bénévoles venant de la région de Sainte Mère Eglise mais aussi de toute la Normandie, de toute la France, des USA et L'Europe. Les AVA comptent de nombreuses personnalités françaises et étrangères parmi ses membres et tout particulièrement nos chers vétérans parachutistes et leurs familles.

The Association of Friends of American Veterans (AVA) and For Franco-American Friendship is the first association created in France to honor and welcome our liberators, the American paratroopers of the Normandy landings in 1944. Since its creation, it has organized many celebrations, inaugurations, friendship banquets, invitations of Americans to French families, etc.

The AVA have created the La Fière Memorial site with the impressive statue called "Iron Mike" (a replica of the one located at the Fort Bragg training camp in the United States) and they manage it. It is one of the most significant sites of the Battle of Normandy.

The association is only made up of volunteer members from the region of Sainte Mère Eglise but also from all of Normandy, all of France, the USA and Europe. The AVA count many French and foreign personalities among its members and especially our dear paratrooper veterans and their families.

Nous avons eu le plaisir d'accueillir chez nous un descendant direct du baron von Steuben, aujourd'hui cadet à West Point.

« Devoir, Honneur, Patrie » !

Cette année, à l'occasion du Jour J, une « cérémonie West Point » se tiendra également au pont de La Fière.

FREEDOM 250 HIGHLIGHTS FRIEDRICH WILHELM VON STEUBEN 🇺🇸🤍🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸💙 Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben was a Prussian-born military officer who had shown great promise in the well-disciplined Prussian Army. He received the honorary title of Baron, while serving as a court chamberlain for a German prince who ruled the Hohenzollern castle. While seeking new military employment, he had a chance encounter with an agent for Benjamin Franklin, who was in Paris at the time gathering support for the American Colonies. Von Steuben travelled to Paris and met with Franklin, who was impressed with Von Steuben’s military training, experience, and personality, and sent a glowing recommendation to General George Washington on his behalf.

The Continental Army rode out the winter of 1777-78 at Valley Forge, where Von Steuben drilled into the soldiers the precision, discipline, toughness and professionalism that the Prussian Army was so renowned for. Under Von Steuben’s training, the Continental Army had become a group of extremely proficient, highly motivated warriors ready to meet the British on equal terms. During this time, he authored the “Blue Book” of detailed regulations for the Army that would serve as its regulation's manual through the War of 1812. Some of the regulations detailed in this manual are still in use today.

𝟴𝟮ᵉ 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝘂 𝗗𝗲́𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 : 𝗹'𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 🤩

Cette année, l'affiche rend hommage aux soldats de la 82nd Airborne Division, parachutés ou missionnés en planeurs, dès la nuit du 5 au 6 juin 1944 sur le territoire de la Baie du Cotentin. Pensée comme un dialogue entre passé et présent, elle associe deux images puissantes, séparées par plus de huit décennies mais réunies par une même mémoire.

Dans sa partie supérieure, une photographie de Christophe Cauchard met en scène des parachutes déployés lors des parachutages commémoratifs de La Fière. Dans sa partie inférieure, une photographie d’archives prise à l’aube du 7 juin 1944 sur l’aérodrome d’Upottery, en Angleterre. Les soldats représentés appartiennent au 325th Glider Infantry Regiment de la 82nd Airborne Division. Ils posent devant un planeur Horsa, chargé de les transporter vers la Normandie.

C'est avec une profonde tristesse que nous avons appris le décès de Dennis Boldt. Il nous avait rendu visite à La Fière en 2024 et était toujours fier d'avoir servi dans la 3e armée américaine de Patton. Helen et Dennis passaient toujours de très bons moments ensemble. Qu'il repose en paix.

Dennis Boldt était un vétéran de l'armée américaine ayant servi sur le théâtre européen pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il a débarqué en Normandie peu après le Jour J et a combattu à travers la France et la Belgique, notamment lors de la bataille des Ardennes.

Boldt a servi au sein de la 90e division d'infanterie, qui opérait sous les ordres de la 3e armée américaine de George S. Patton lors des principales campagnes en Europe. Certains témoignages font également mention d'un lien avec la 79e division blindée, bien que la 90e division d'infanterie semble être l'unité la plus fréquemment associée à son parcours militaire.

Au sein d'une unité d'artillerie antiaérienne, Boldt a travaillé comme mécanicien et technicien principal, manœuvrant les directeurs de tir M7 utilisés avec les batteries d'artillerie antiaérienne de 90 mm. Ces systèmes ont permis de calculer les solutions de ciblage contre les avions ennemis et ont soutenu les opérations terrestres alliées tout au long de la campagne d'Europe.

Durant la guerre, il a participé à cinq campagnes majeures, dont la campagne de Normandie et la bataille des Ardennes. Il a été incorporé dans l'armée à Fort Snelling, puis formé à Camp Callan, un important centre d'entraînement à l'artillerie antiaérienne pendant le conflit.

Après son retour au Minnesota à la fin de la guerre, Boldt a travaillé comme serrurier et est resté membre de la génération de vétérans souvent appelée la « Plus Grande Génération ».

Lors des commémorations du 80e anniversaire du Débarquement en 2024, Dennis Boldt est retourné en Normandie pour honorer la mémoire de ceux qui ont servi et de ceux qui ne sont jamais revenus. Des photos et des vidéos de ces commémorations l'ont montré revisitant les plages de Normandie plus de 80 ans après le débarquement allié.

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Dennis Boldt. He visited us in La Fiere in 2024 and he was always proud to have served in Patton's 3rd Army. Helen and Dennis always had a very good time together. May he rest in peace.

Dennis Boldt was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the European Theater during World War II. He landed in Normandy shortly after D-Day and fought across France and Belgium, including during the Battle of the Bulge.

Boldt served with the 90th Infantry Division, which operated under George S. Patton’s Third United States Army during major campaigns in Europe. Some accounts also reference an association with the 79th Armored Division, though the 90th Infantry Division appears most consistently connected to his service record.

As part of an anti-aircraft artillery unit, Boldt worked as a senior mechanic and technician operating M7 gun directors used with 90mm anti-aircraft artillery batteries. These systems helped calculate targeting solutions against enemy aircraft and supported Allied ground operations throughout the European campaign.

His wartime service included participation in five major campaigns, including the Normandy Campaign and the Battle of the Bulge. He was inducted into the Army at Fort Snelling and later trained at Camp Callan, a major anti-aircraft artillery training center during the war.

After returning home to Minnesota following the war, Boldt worked as a locksmith and remained part of the generation of veterans often referred to as the “Greatest Generation.”

During the 80th anniversary commemorations of D-Day in 2024, Dennis Boldt returned to Normandy to honor those who served and those who never came home. Photos and videos from the commemorations showed him revisiting the beaches of Normandy more than 80 years after the Allied landings.

Molson Coors recognized Dennis Boldt, a Mankato native and World War II veteran whose service included the Battle of the Bulge and Normandy, during Monday's game against the 49ers.
