It was an outstanding week, from May 18 to 22 in Casablanca, Morocco, for the IALA World-Wide Academy, with two training courses held simultaneously. The Academy contributed to the Manager of Aids to Navigation training (Level 1.1) delivered by ISEM, the only accredited training organization on the African continent, by delivering the third and final module. In addition, the Academy delivered another training session on the IALA risk management toolbox (Level 1.3), hosted by ISEM. The Academy and ISEM thus trained a total of 51 participants from 10 countries across three continents, working in excellent collaboration.

IALA was pleased to attend Digital@Sea North America 2026 in Fort Lauderdale (6–7 May), alongside the RTCM Assembly & Conference.
The program provided a strong forum for exchanging practical perspectives on maritime digitalization for safer navigation—covering S-100 rollout updates, implementation considerations for charts, MSI, and service delivery (including enabling infrastructure and methods), and a panel on tactical S-100 implementation (strategies, timelines, and challenges).
Thank you to the organizers, speakers, and participants for the thoughtful discussions and constructive dialogue.

The in-person week of the 22nd session of the IALA Engineering and Sustainability Committee (ENG22) was hosted at IALA HQ from 13–17 April.
ENG22 convened 119 participants representing 66 Member States, alongside Associate, Affiliate and Industrial Affiliate members, and Observers. The Committee also welcomed 26 new participants, with continued hybrid participation (24 attendees joining online).
The session delivered progress across a broad set of technical and strategic topics, including Aids to Navigation (AtoN) harmonisation; continued work on resilient PNT through Recommendation R1017; updates to Guideline G1023 on Leading Lights; developments related to Precise Point Positioning (PPP); and ongoing improvements to racon performance and application in complex harbour environments. The Committee also continued liaison engagement with other committees and partner organisations, including RTCM and ARM.
A key outcome of ENG22 was the comprehensive update of the Level 2 Technician Training Model Courses, reinforcing IALA’s commitment to capacity building and standardised training across the maritime sector.
The Committee also advanced discussions on the future role of eLoran. Based on a joint proposal from the Republic of Korea, France and the United Kingdom, a roadmap for standardisation was endorsed in principle, with IALA identified as a potential coordinating body (subject to Council consideration). A dedicated task group has been established to further develop this work.
