Sciences Publica Student group at Sciences Po: A forum for free thought on a new era

17/04/2016

We, the members of Sciences Publica, stand in alliance with the students of Columbia Divest for Climate Justice who have been occupying low library since Thursday April 14, and we support their demand for complete fossil fuel divestment for Columbia University. As a student group aiming to raise awareness on issues of social justice, we are attached to denounce the power games that benefit the richest at the expense of the rest of the population, and we support organizations dedicated to fight this market of injustice. We are fully and staunchly opposed to the drainage and damaging of natural capital led by greed-driven behavior.

Hey everybody! Sciences Publica is beginning a new initiative of sharing three interesting papers or articles every week in order to foster lively debates on campus. We want to make sure that we remember that we are a school of political science and that deliberation and discussion are essential to getting people involved in a variety of important issues going on around the world. This week, we would like to talk about the polemical definitions of terrorism and national security by sharing a chapter of Noam Chomsky’s book Hegemony or Survival. Chomsky is a prominent American intellectual in linguistics and American foreign policy. We are also posting an essay by George Orwell called Politics and the English Language as well as a Vice documentary on drugs and politics in Trinidad and Tobago.

Please feel free to comment on the post with your opinion, but remember that Sciences Publica is trying to begin a courteous and respectful debate about important world issues. We will also be on campus and any member will be willing to discuss the weekly article with you!

In any case, here is your first edition of R***e de Presse et badasseries!

This WEDNESDAY (09/30), the European alliance "Stop TTIP" will come to Reims as a part of its nation-wide campaign to raise awareness about TAFTA. The aim is to meet with the public and engage with anyone who wants to know more about the controversial treaty, and collect signatures for the "pétition citoyenne" against TAFTA.

Starting 1:30, a group of Sciences Publica members will walk to the demonstration, and we strongly encourage YOU to join!

Tomorrow, militants will gather all over the world to march in favor of cannabis legalization. The 20th of April (420) has become the unofficial international day to put an end to the war on ma*****na. Given the political, social and economic implications of this decision, Sciences Publica has put up a shelf in the library with the help of Matthew Baker to shed more light on the issue, as well as a documentary list soon to be published. As we very well expect the opinions on the issue to vary, all students are free to add any literature deemed relevant.

What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?- Gandhi

Serve the People by Ari Paul Homelessness isn’t an accident. It’s the result of a brutal economic system and conscious state policy. These photos were taken during one of the Maraude Citoyenne Remoise's weekly distributions to the homeless community in Reims. Every week, the association distributes hot food, hygiene kits, blankets and clothes to more than 70 people. Beyond fulfilling material needs, the association and its contributors most importantly interact with the homeless, allowing them for once to be considered as equal.

Sciences Publica has been working closely with the association, contributing to the maraudes by raising funds or helping with the cooking and the distribution and we encourage you to take a look at these photos as well as the Maraude's page if you are interested in their actions.

New post on Truth is a Beaver: although it is often praised as Latin America's most successful democracy, Chile's political and economic institutions have changed only very little since Pinochet's dictatorship.

This democratic deficit has been addressed consistently by the Chilean social movements, who have brought democracy to the streets in an effort to reopen politics to the people. The radical nature of these protests are not in their demands, but in the practices undertaken by Chilean citizens in the streets.

Take a careful look at the potential of this "street democracy", which gives us food for thought concerning the deepening of our own democracies.

When the Chileans famously answered “NO” to the national plebiscite of the 5th of October of 1988, which denied General Augusto Pinochet a second term as president, they thought they ...
