🇲🇹 Malta this week participated at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris 🇺🇳 in the 14th Session of the Subsidiary Committee to the Meeting of States Parties to the 1970 Convention, together with the 25th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for Promoting the Return of Cultural Property to its Countries of Origin or its Restitution in case of Illicit Appropriation (ICPRCP).

Malta was represented by Dr Jeanine Rizzo, Legal Advisor at the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage (SCH), and Mariah Zammit, Technical Attaché at the Permanent Delegation of Malta to UNESCO.

The meetings focused on strengthening international cooperation 🤝 in safeguarding cultural heritage 🏛️ and addressing the illicit trafficking and restitution of cultural property.

Malta was pleased to attend an immersive visit for delegations, organised by the Permanent Delegation of Cyprus 🇨🇾 on the occasion of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union 🇪🇺 , centred around the exhibition “Chypre au Louvre”.

Hosted within the Department of Oriental Antiquities, the exhibition brings together exceptional works on loan from the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus, complemented by a unique digital and sensory experience. From emblematic artefacts such as Chalcolithic picrolite idols and inscribed copper ingots from Enkomi, to terracotta votive statues and representations linked to the “Great Goddess” and Asclepius of Paphos, the exhibition offers a rich journey through Cyprus’ cultural and historical legacy and its role in ancient Mediterranean exchanges.

The experience is further enriched by strong academic and curatorial contributions, including those of Hélène Le Meaux, curator at the Louvre, whose research notably includes work on the cippus of Malta, alongside Cypriot scholars such as Artemis Georgiou and Professor George Papasavvas, whose work highlights the interconnected cultural, political, and economic dynamics of the Mediterranean from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age.

Enhanced by poetry, music, and storytelling, the exhibition bridges tangible and intangible heritage, offering a truly interactive and multidisciplinary experience.

Such initiatives highlight our shared commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage, while fostering cultural dialogue and strengthening cooperation across our regions.

Today at UNESCO Headquarters, we marked four years since Russia launched its full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine 🇺🇦

We honour the resilience of the Ukrainian people and reaffirm our solidarity in defending freedom, sovereignty and human dignity.

Within UNESCO’s mandate, the impact on education, culture and science is significant and continued international cooperation is vital.

Sincere appreciation to the Permanent Delegations of Finland, Poland, Ukraine and Lithuania for organising this important event and fostering dialogue on support and restoration.

Malta has formally submitted a new World Heritage nomination to UNESCO entitled “The Maltese Fortifications of the Knights of St John.” 🇲🇹

The nomination brings together a unique network of fortified sites, including Valletta, the Harbour fortifications, the Cottonera and Sta Margherita Lines, Mdina, and the Gozo Ċittadella.

Following its submission, the nomination will now go through an extensive and rigorous evaluation process by the UNESCO advisory bodies and ultimately the World Heritage Committee, assessing the Outstanding Universal Value, integrity, authenticity, and long-term protection of the proposed sites.

The nomination is supported by extensive technical input from national heritage entities, including the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage , the Restoration and Preservation Directorate, Heritage Malta, the Planning Authority, the Malta National Library, and several other stakeholders.

A collective national effort to recognise, protect, and promote Malta’s outstanding cultural heritage.

We are starting the week by marking the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.

A briefing at the Mémorial de la Shoah, organised by the Permanent Delegations of France and Germany in collaboration with UNESCO, focused on preserving Holocaust memory and countering antisemitism, denial, and distortion.
