A new article from The Economist highlights how Africa’s growing middle class is transforming the continent’s urban landscape, with residential developments increasingly expanding beyond traditional city centres.
The article draws on data from Africapolis, the OECD/SWAC platform that maps and analyses urbanisation dynamics across Africa.

Africapolis provides a harmonised view of urban growth across more than 11,000 urban agglomerations in 54 African countries. By combining historical demographic data (1950–2020) with projections to 2050, it offers one of the most comprehensive pictures of how African cities are evolving and where future population growth is likely to take place.
As urbanisation accelerates across the continent, reliable data remains essential for informing land-use planning, housing, infrastructure and service delivery policies. We are pleased to see contributing to the global conversation on Africa’s urban future.
