Over 700 submissions from 98 countries, linked to more than 120 UNESCO Biosphere Reserves worldwide, poured in from young people aged 18–35 telling the story of how their communities live in harmony with nature — through photography and short-form video, shot entirely on mobile.

🌿✨ Meet Jose Luis Cortez Flores from one of the 2026 MAB Young Scientist Awards laureates! 🏆
He is an applied economist at Universidad del Pacífico, previously tracked El Niño's economic impact on mangrove-dependent communities in northern Peru. Now, he is building the mangrove-based adaptation priority index, a tool aimed at mapping socioeconomic vulnerability, climate exposure, ecosystem condition and intervention feasibility into a single stakeholder-validated framework for Peru's national protected area authority. ⚡🌎
His work aims to transform data on social vulnerability, climate and ecosystems into tools that help identify where adaptation measures can bring the greatest benefits to people and to the mangrove forest
Since 2022, the MAB Young Scientists Awards has received support from the Principality of Monaco enabling additional annual fellowships specifically benefitting studies on marine, island and coastal issues in biosphere reserves.

🌿 Today, on the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, we celebrate the people working every day to restore these extraordinary ecosystems.

In La Encrucijada Biosphere Reserve, Mexico, local communities are bringing mangroves back to life through the MangRes project, funded by the Government of Flanders.

The area shown in this video was once severely degraded. Today, thanks to community-led restoration, the mangroves have grown to more than 1.5 metres in height, demonstrating that successful restoration goes far beyond planting trees—it means restoring the ecological functions of the ecosystem and strengthening the resilience of both nature and communities.

Together, we are restoring mangroves for people, biodiversity and the future.
