🌍✈️ Embassy sets goal to surpass 50,000 Spanish tourists this year 🇱🇰🇪🇸

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Paris, accredited to Spain, successfully organized a webinar in collaboration with CEAV (Confederación Española de Agencias de Viajes) with the support of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB), bringing together nearly 150 Spanish travel agents eager to promote Sri Lanka as a destination for Spanish travellers.

The webinar commenced with welcome remarks by Sanju Dasanayake, Chargé d’Affaires a.i., while Mercedes Tejero, Manager of CEAV, addressed the gathering, highlighting the growing importance of Sri Lanka in the Spanish outbound travel market.
A comprehensive presentation was delivered by Valentin Mathieu from the Commercial Division of the Embassy, showcasing Sri Lanka’s diverse tourism offerings 🌴🏖️ from golden beaches, wildlife safaris 🐘, tea trails 🍃, heritage sites 🏛️, wellness retreats 🧘‍♀️, to luxury escapes and authentic cultural experiences. The free visa facility to visit Sri Lanka till 30 June 2026 was also highlighted.

During the interactive session, Prasadi Boomawalage, First Secretary (Commercial) addressed the questions raised by participating travel agents and concluded the webinar with the vote of thanks, reaffirming Sri Lanka’s readiness to welcome more Spanish visitors this year and beyond.

📈 In 2025 alone, Sri Lanka welcomed over 46,000 Spanish travellers, reflecting a strong upward trend and growing interest in the island as an emerging destination. Until May 2026, Sri Lanka has attracted 9793 Spanish travellers to the island.

El webinar comenzó con las palabras de bienvenida de Sanju Dasanayake, Chargé d’Affaires a.i., mientras que Mercedes Tejero, Directora de CEAV, destacó la creciente importancia de Sri Lanka en el mercado emisor español.

Una completa presentación fue realizada por Valentin Mathieu de la División Comercial de la Embajada, mostrando la diversa oferta turística de Sri Lanka 🌴🏖️: playas paradisíacas, safaris de vida salvaje 🐘, rutas del té 🍃, sitios patrimoniales 🏛️, retiros de bienestar 🧘‍♀️, experiencias de lujo y auténticas vivencias culturales. Durante la sesión interactiva, Prasadi Boomawalage, Primera Secretaria (Comercial) respondió a las preguntas planteadas por los agentes de viajes y cerró el webinar con palabras de agradecimiento, reafirmando la disposición de Sri Lanka para recibir a más visitantes españoles este año y en el futuro.

L’Ambassade du Sri Lanka à Paris, accréditée auprès de l’Espagne, a organisé avec succès un webinaire en collaboration avec la CEAV (Confederación Española de Agencias de Viajes), avec le soutien du Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB), réunissant près de 150 agents de voyage espagnols intéressés par la promotion du Sri Lanka.

Le webinaire a débuté par les mots de bienvenue de Sanju Dasanayake, Chargée d’Affaires a.i., suivis de l’intervention de Mercedes Tejero, Directrice de la CEAV, qui a souligné l’importance croissante du Sri Lanka sur le marché touristique espagnol.

Une présentation complète a été assurée par Valentin Mathieu de la Division Commerciale de l’Ambassade, mettant en valeur la diversité de l’offre touristique sri-lankaise 🌴🏖️ : plages paradisiaques, safaris 🐘, routes du thé 🍃, sites patrimoniaux 🏛️, retraites bien-être 🧘‍♀️, expériences de luxe et découvertes culturelles authentiques. 🍃☕ Sri Lanka Embassy participates in the Paris Tea Festival for the first time and attracts massive crowds 🇱🇰🇫🇷🫖

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Paris in partnership with the Sri Lanka Tea Board, participated in the “Paris Tea Festival 2026”, for the very first time, proudly promoting the heritage and excellence of Pure Ceylon Tea. 🌿🍃

📍 Day 1 – Public Day (13 June)
A vibrant day of engagement with tea lovers and the public, where visitors discovered the story, authenticity, and diversity of Ceylon Tea, at the prestigious are of Paris 15 in the heart of the city.

📍 Day 2 – Trade & Buyers Day (14 June)
An important platform to connect with tea buyers, professionals, and industry stakeholders, creating valuable discussions on sourcing, trade opportunities, and the growing demand for Ceylon Tea in the French market.

Across the two days over 1,500 cups of Ceylon Tea were served to the visitors for tasting 🍵, introducing visitors to Sri Lanka’s seven unique tea-growing regions, artisanal tea grades, and the Lion Logo, the mark of authenticity and quality. 🦁🍃

The overwhelming interest, strong engagement at our booth, and promising commercial inquiries reflected the growing appreciation for Ceylon Tea and its unique place in the global tea market. 🌍✨

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who visited us and shared this journey through the world of Ceylon Tea.

L’Ambassade du Sri Lanka à Paris, en partenariat avec le Sri Lanka Tea Board, a participé pour la toute première fois au Paris Tea Festival 2026, mettant fièrement à l’honneur l’héritage et l’excellence du Pure Ceylon Tea. 🌿🍃

📍 Jour 1 – Journée grand public (13 juin)
Une journée dynamique de rencontres et d’échanges avec les amateurs de thé et le grand public, où les visiteurs ont découvert l’histoire, l’authenticité et la diversité du thé de Ceylan, dans le cadre prestigieux de Paris 15, au cœur de la capitale.

📍 Jour 2 – Journée professionnelle & acheteurs (14 juin)
Une plateforme importante pour rencontrer des acheteurs de thé, des professionnels et des acteurs du secteur, permettant de créer des échanges précieux sur l’approvisionnement, les opportunités commerciales et la demande croissante de thé de Ceylan sur le marché français.

Au cours de ces deux journées, plus de 1 500 tasses de thé de Ceylan ont été servies aux visiteurs pour dégustation 🍵, leur permettant de découvrir les sept régions uniques de production du thé au Sri Lanka, les grades artisanaux, ainsi que le Lion Logo, symbole d’authenticité et de qualité. 🦁🍃

L’intérêt remarquable du public, le fort engagement autour de notre stand et les nombreuses demandes commerciales prometteuses témoignent de l’appréciation croissante du thé de Ceylan et de sa place unique sur le marché mondial du thé. 🌍✨

Sri Lanka and France strengthen Bilateral Relations at the Second Round of Political Consultations

The Second Round of Political Consultations between Sri Lanka and France was held on 9th June 2026, virtually. The consultations were co-chaired by Director-General of the Europe and North America Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism of Sri Lanka, Sugeeshwara Gunaratna and Director for Asia & Oceania in the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the French Republic, Benoit Guidée.

The consultations marked an important milestone in the longstanding and cordial relationship between Sri Lanka and France and sought to build on the momentum achieved in the recent past. Both sides underscored the constructive engagement as a testament to the strong partnership between the two countries and an opportunity to review progress and identify new areas of cooperation, following the successful inaugural session of bilateral political consultations held in October 2023 in Colombo.

The two sides reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations, especially, bilateral political engagements, maritime and defence cooperation, and cooperation on trade, tourism and development. Prospects for strengthening linkages in education and people-to-people exchanges were also discussed.

Sri Lanka conveyed its sincere appreciation to the Government of the French Republic for the generous humanitarian assistance extended to Sri Lanka in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah.

Both sides noted with satisfaction the leading role played by flagship French investments in Sri Lanka, with the French side noting that French investors have given a vote of confidence for Sri Lanka. The longstanding development cooperation provided by France to Sri Lanka and the increase in tourism from France to Sri Lanka over the last few years were also appreciated.

The two delegations recognized the establishment of the Regional Centre for Maritime Studies (RCMS) as a significant achievement and explored avenues to further strengthen this cooperation, drawing on France’s integrated approach to ocean governance and institutional coordination mechanisms.

The consultations highlighted shared priorities in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable ocean governance. In this regard, Sri Lanka underscored its ratification of the BBNJ Agreement and appreciated France’s support in advancing the BBNJ process, with both sides expressing interest in closer collaboration towards the effective implementation and operationalization of the Agreement.

The two delegations also exchanged views on regional and global developments, and reaffirmed their commitment to working closely within the United Nations and other multilateral fora on issues of mutual interest. Both sides reiterated their adherence to the principles of the UN Charter, international law, and multilateral cooperation.

The Sri Lankan delegation included senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, together with Chargé d’ Affaires a.i of the Embassy of Sri Lanka to the French Republic Sanju Dasanayake, and other senior officials of the Embassy including Minister (Consular) Himali Rathnaweera, Minister (UNESCO) Rifa Wadood, First Secretary (Defence) Chaminda Udawatta, and First Secretary (Commercial)Prasadi Boomawalage.

A special felicitation ceremony in honour of Chief Executive Officer of Orange Marine at the Embassy

On 05 June 2026, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Paris hosted a special felicitation ceremony on 05 June 2026, in honour of Didier Dillard, Chief Executive Officer of Orange Marine, in recognition of his contribution to strengthening maritime cooperation between Sri Lanka and France.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of Orange Marine, Colombo Dockyard PLC, the Export Development Board of Sri Lanka (EDB) and the Chamber of Marine Industries of Sri Lanka (CMISL) both physically and online.

Opening the event, Sanju Dasanayake, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Paris, highlighted the growing maritime partnership between Sri Lanka and France and the significance of the collaboration between Orange Marine and Colombo Dockyard PLC as an example of successful industrial cooperation between the two countries.

Addressing the gathering virtually from Sri Lanka, Mangala Wijesinghe, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Export Development Board, commended Orange Marine’s confidence in Sri Lankan shipbuilding capabilities and emphasized the importance of promoting Sri Lanka as a competitive maritime and investment destination. He also extended an invitation to Orange Marine to participate in Sri Lanka Expo 2027, which will take place in Colombo from 14-17 January 2027.

President of the Chamber of Marine Industries of Sri Lanka Kaushal Rajapaksha, highlighted the positive impact of the partnership on Sri Lanka’s maritime industry and noted that such collaborations contribute significantly to enhancing the country’s international reputation in the shipbuilding and marine engineering sectors.

A video presentation on the cable-laying vessel Sophie Germain, constructed by Colombo Dockyard PLC for Orange Marine and delivered in 2023, was screened during the event. Participants also noted with appreciation the continued confidence placed in Sri Lanka through the construction of two additional sister vessels scheduled for delivery in 2028 and 2029.

In his keynote address, CEO Didier Dillard reflected on the decision to partner with Colombo Dockyard PLC for the construction of Sophie Germain and expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the project. He highly appreciated the quality of workmanship, professionalism, commitment and dedication demonstrated by the Sri Lankan workforce throughout the construction process. CEO Dillard further expressed confidence that the two sister vessels currently under construction would be delivered to the same high standards of excellence that characterized the successful completion of Sophie Germain. Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Colombo Dockyard PLC Thimira Godakumbura, underscored the importance of the partnership with Orange Marine and reaffirmed the Colombo Dockyard’s commitment to delivering the two new vessels with the same level of quality, reliability and technical excellence.

A commemorative plaque was presented to CEO Didier Dillard by Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Sanju Dasanayake, in appreciation of his contribution to strengthening maritime cooperation between Sri Lanka and France and in exchange, CEO Didier Dillard handed over the stamps and postcards featuring ‘Orange Marine’. The gestures were warmly appreciated by all participants, including representatives of Orange Marine who attended the event.

The ceremony concluded with a traditional Sri Lankan lunch, providing participants with an opportunity to continue their discussions and further strengthen professional and business connections in a warm and convivial setting.

The event was moderated by Prasadi Boomawalage, First Secretary (Commercial) and vote of thanks was delivered by Himali Rathnaweera, Minister/Consular of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Paris, France.

The ceremony served as a valuable platform to celebrate a successful partnership that has contributed to strengthening maritime cooperation, trade and investment ties between Sri Lanka and France, while showcasing Sri Lanka’s growing capabilities in the global shipbuilding industry.

Cérémonie spéciale d'hommage en l'honneur du directeur général d'Orange Marine à l'ambassade

Le 5 juin 2026, l'ambassade du Sri Lanka à Paris a organisé une cérémonie spéciale d'hommage en l'honneur de Didier Dillard, directeur général d'Orange Marine, afin de saluer sa contribution au renforcement de la coopération maritime entre le Sri Lanka et la France.

Des représentants d’Orange Marine, de Colombo Dockyard PLC, du Conseil de développement des exportations du Sri Lanka (EDB) et de la Chambre des industries maritimes du Sri Lanka (CMISL) ont assisté à la cérémonie, tant en présentiel qu’en ligne.

En ouvrant l’événement, Sanju Dasanayake, chargé d’affaires par intérim de l’ambassade du Sri Lanka à Paris, a souligné le partenariat maritime croissant entre le Sri Lanka et la France, ainsi que l’importance de la collaboration entre Orange Marine et Colombo Dockyard PLC, qu’il a présentée comme un exemple de coopération industrielle réussie entre les deux pays.

S’adressant virtuellement à l’assemblée depuis le Sri Lanka, Mangala Wijesinghe, président-directeur général de l’Export Development Board, a salué la confiance d’Orange Marine dans les capacités de construction navale du Sri Lanka et a souligné l’importance de promouvoir le Sri Lanka en tant que destination maritime et d’investissement compétitive. Il a également invité Orange Marine à participer au Sri Lanka Expo 2027, qui se tiendra à Colombo du 14 au 17 janvier 2027.

Le président de la Chambre des industries maritimes du Sri Lanka, Kaushal Rajapaksha, a souligné l’impact positif de ce partenariat sur l’industrie maritime sri-lankaise et a noté que de telles collaborations contribuent de manière significative à renforcer la réputation internationale du pays dans les secteurs de la construction navale et de l’ingénierie maritime.

Une présentation vidéo du navire câblier Sophie Germain, construit par Colombo Dockyard PLC pour Orange Marine et livré en 2023, a été diffusée au cours de l’événement. Les participants ont également salué la confiance renouvelée accordée au Sri Lanka à travers la construction de deux navires jumeaux supplémentaires dont la livraison est prévue en 2028 et 2029.

Dans son discours d’ouverture, le PDG Didier Dillard est revenu sur la décision de s’associer à Colombo Dockyard PLC pour la construction du Sophie Germain et a exprimé sa satisfaction quant au résultat du projet. Il a vivement apprécié la qualité du travail, le professionnalisme, l’engagement et le dévouement dont a fait preuve la main-d’œuvre sri-lankaise tout au long du processus de construction. Le PDG Dillard s’est en outre dit confiant que les deux navires jumeaux actuellement en construction seraient livrés selon les mêmes normes d’excellence qui ont caractérisé l’achèvement réussi du Sophie Germain.
Thimira Godakumbura, PDG et directeur général de Colombo Dockyard PLC, a souligné l’importance du partenariat avec Orange Marine et a réaffirmé l’engagement de Colombo Dockyard à livrer les deux nouveaux navires avec le même niveau de qualité, de fiabilité et d’excellence technique.

Une plaque commémorative a été remise au PDG Didier Dillard par le chargé d’affaires par intérim Sanju Dasanayake, en reconnaissance de sa contribution au renforcement de la coopération maritime entre le Sri Lanka et la France. En échange, le PDG Didier Dillard a remis des timbres et des cartes postales à l’effigie d’« Orange Marine ». Ces gestes ont été chaleureusement appréciés par tous les participants, y compris les représentants d’Orange Marine présents à l’événement.

La cérémonie s’est conclue par un déjeuner traditionnel sri-lankais, offrant aux participants l’occasion de poursuivre leurs discussions et de renforcer davantage leurs liens professionnels et commerciaux dans un cadre chaleureux et convivial.
L’événement a été animé par Prasadi Boomawalage, premier secrétaire (commercial), et le discours de remerciement a été prononcé par Himali Rathnaweera, ministre/consulaire de l’ambassade du Sri Lanka à Paris, en France.

La cérémonie a constitué une plateforme précieuse pour célébrer un partenariat fructueux qui a contribué à renforcer la coopération maritime, les liens commerciaux et les investissements entre le Sri Lanka et la France, tout en mettant en avant les capacités croissantes du Sri Lanka dans l'industrie mondiale de la construction navale.
