The Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO is pleased to welcome the inclusion of the “Painted Haveli Towns of Shekhawati” on India’s Tentative List by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre highlights the exceptional cultural landscape of the Shekhawati region.

Spread across 14 historic towns, the property brings together magnificent havelis, forts, bazaars, temples, chhatris and traditional water systems, reflecting the region’s distinctive architectural traditions and adaptation to an arid environment.

Its celebrated frescoes, depicting mythology, everyday life, historical events and changing social realities, preserve a remarkable record of the artistic and mercantile traditions of Rajasthan.

The inclusion on the Tentative List is an important step towards bringing the rich heritage of Shekhawati to wider global attention.

The Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO is pleased to welcome the inclusion of “Nicobarese Cultural Continuity in the Central Group of Nicobar Islands” on India’s Tentative List by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. A significant recognition of India’s rich cultural and natural heritage which highlights the living cultural heritage of the Nicobarese people and their enduring relationship with the islands, forests, seas and coastal environment.

The site reflects the continuity of indigenous knowledge, customary practices, community institutions, traditional settlements, material culture and living traditions that have evolved over generations within the distinctive island ecosystem.

The inclusion on the WHC's Tentative List marks an important step in bringing the rich cultural heritage of the Nicobarese communities and the Nicobar Islands to wider global attention.

The Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO is pleased to welcome the inclusion of the "Colonial Penal Settlement of Andaman Islands" in India’s Tentative List of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

Comprising Chatham Island, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island (Ross Island), Viper Island and the Cellular Jail, the serial property traces the evolution of the British colonial penal system in the Andamans from 1858.

The Cellular Jail, or Kala Pani, became an enduring symbol of the suffering, sacrifice and resistance of India’s freedom fighters. The wider penal settlement preserves a powerful landscape of memory, resilience and India’s struggle for freedom.

Its inclusion on the WHC's Tentative List is an important step in bringing this significant chapter of India’s history and heritage to wider global attention.

The Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO is pleased to welcome the "Rangpur-Sivasagar Historic Ensemble" of Assam to India’s Tentative List of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

Submitted by India on 19 June 2026 under criteria (iii) and (iv), the Ensemble reflects nearly six centuries of the Tai-Ahom kingdom’s history and its profound influence on the cultural landscape of the Brahmaputra Valley.

Comprising palaces, fortifications, temples, historic roads and bridges, and the historic tanks of Sivasagar, Joysagar and Gaurisagar, the Ensemble reflects Assam’s distinctive architectural, cultural and hydraulic traditions. The Ensemble stands as a testament to the ingenuity, resilience and cultural continuity of Assam, and reflects the creative exchanges between Tai-Ahom, Assamese, Hindu, Indo-Persian and other traditions.

Its recognition on the WHC's Tentative List is an important step in highlighting the rich diversity of India’s cultural heritage.
