๐ŸŒŠ Weโ€™re thrilled to announce the launch of a new contract with Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme - SPREP dedicated to "๐Œ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐“๐ก๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ ๐Š๐ž๐ฒ ๐Œ๐š๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ž ๐’๐ฉ๐ž๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ" as part of phase II of the EUR 20 Million Pacific-EU Marine Partnership (PEUMP) programme.

The EU joined Hon. Amenatave V. Yauvoli, Director of Biodiversity Conservation at SPREP to launch this phase II on the margins of the Pacific Regional Workshop on the Global Biodiversity Framework in Nadi today.

This launch highlights our joint commitment to protecting marine species, address key threats to biodiversity, and contribute to healthier, more resilient ocean ecosystems.

We look forward to working with Pacific partners like SPREP and EU Member States in the region, namely the AFD - Agence Franรงaise de Dรฉveloppement and the German Development Agency (GIZ) to advance effective solutions for the Pacific Ocean where they are needed most. ๐ŸŒ

The European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to Solomon Islands and signalled a shift towards a stronger investment-focused partnership, with discussions centred on infrastructure, economic development and future cooperation under the EUโ€™s Global Gateway strategy.

During a high-level visit, EU officials highlighted Solomon Islands as one of the blocโ€™s key Pacific partners and explored potential support for major projects, including the proposed Bina Harbour development, while strengthening political and regional ties.

๐ŸŒŠ To mark World Ocean Day, the EU Delegation joined The University of the South Pacific to launch three new Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) on Sea Urchins, Coconut Crabs and Octopus developed through the Pacific - EU Marine Partnership (PEUMP) programme!

These free, self-paced online courses are open to everyone regardless of location and background! They complement other open courses on SDG 14: LIFE Below Water and on sharks and rays that were also developed by USP staff through the PEUMP programme.

At the launch, the EU also joined Pacific Ocean Litter Youth Project-POLYP for a beach clean-up to raise awareness on marine pollution, collecting over 50kg of waste washed up on the campus shoreline.

During their visit to the Solomon Islands, Ambassador Barbara Plinkert together with Mr Peteris Ustubs, Director for Asia, Central Asia, and the Pacific in the European Commissionโ€™s Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA) visited the site of a future Bina Harbour in the Malaita province of the Solomon Islands, to explore EU funding for a game-changing tuna processing plant and port โ€“ creating 1,600 jobs, boosting local trade, and building climate resilience.

Ambassador Barbara Plinkert is currently visiting the Solomon Islands together with Mr Peteris Ustubs, Director for Asia, Central Asia and the Pacific in the European Commission's Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA).

Substantial discussions were held with key members of the newly-appointed government, including Deputy Prime Minister Francis Sade, Minister of Finance and Treasury Gordon Darcy Lilo, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Development Franklyn Derek Nasi, Minister of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification Derrick Rawcliffe Manuari, and Minister of Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening Alfred Lazarus Rimah, reviewing cooperation on energy, water, infrastructure and reconfirming strong EU-Solomon Islands partnership.

With great potential under the EU's Strategy, we look forward to expanding the EU-Solomon Islands cooperation further with future engagement.
