MINISTRY TO APPOINT NEW DOCTORS

The Office of the Prime Minister with the Ministry of Health & Medical Services acknowledge the concerns raised by medical interns in respect of their appointment to becoming medical officers.

Having understood the existing circumstances facing the health sector the Ministry of Health and Medical Services is grateful to the Prime Minister, Hon. Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka for making exceptions to the Ministry of Health & Medical Services in uplifting the recent Ministry of Civil Service Circular No. 6/2026 which instituted a freeze on new appointments and vacancies across the civil service as part of the response measures to the global fuel crisis.

The Ministry of Health & Medical Services will adhere to due processes in the recruitment and selection of new medical officers who have completed their internship and have obtained their general registration from the Fiji Medical Council.

It is expected that the Ministry of Health & Medical Services will complete this process by August 2026.

PM RABUKA WELCOMES JIANGSU VICE GOVERNOR: REAFFIRMS STRONG FIJI-CHINA RELATIONS

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka yesterday welcomed His Excellency Zhao Yan, Vice Governor of Jiangsu Province of the People’s Republic of China, and his delegation and reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with China.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister expressed Fiji’s appreciation to the Government of the People’s Republic of China for its continued support through socio-economic programmes, and people-to-people initiatives, while noting the importance of Fiji’s position on the One China Policy to the Fiji-China relations.
Fiji and China established diplomatic relations in 1975.

At the outset, the Prime Minister highlighted the strategic importance of Vanua Levu as Fiji’s next major economic growth hub and welcomed opportunities for Jiangsu Province to support its development.

He noted the significance of the FJD300 million China-Aid Vanua Levu Road Upgrading Project, a flagship Belt and Road Initiative project that will upgrade more than 80 kilometres of rural roads and over 20 bridges to climate-resilient standards.

The project is expected to improve connectivity for 61 villages and 15 schools while enhancing access to essential services and economic opportunities across the Northern Division.

Prime Minister Rabuka also discussed key regional priorities, including the Ocean of Peace Declaration, which promotes peace, unity, and resilience across the Blue Pacific amid growing global geopolitical uncertainty.

At the multilateral level, Prime Minister Rabuka acknowledged China’s contributions through its Global Development, Security, Civilisation, and Governance Initiatives and reiterated Fiji’s cooperation in working with China to advancing common interests through the United Nations-centred multilateral system.

In closing, Prime Minister Rabuka thanked Vice Governor Zhao for his visit and signalled further discussion on potential areas of cooperation with the province.

Vice Governor Zhao, in his response, thanked the Prime Minister for the opportunity to meet and discuss areas of cooperation.

The Fiji Government yesterday fulfilled a long-standing commitment with the official handover of a parcel of land to the Mataqali Nailagobokola of the Yavusa Vunivivi in Nausori.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Prime Minister Rabuka described the occasion as a significant milestone that recognises the enduring connection between the iTaukei people and their ancestral lands while strengthening partnerships between Government and landowners.

Speaking in the iTaukei language, the Prime Minister acknowledged the perseverance and patience of the Mataqali Nailagobokola throughout the lengthy process of more than two decades, which involved navigating historical land ownership arrangements and constitutional requirements.

PRIME MINISTER RABUKA LAUNCHES THE EXECUTIVE PUBLIC LEADERSHIP COURSE AT FNU

Prime Minister Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka today officially launched the Executive Public Leadership Course at the Fiji National University (FNU), a strategic investment that focuses on strengthening leadership, governance, and institutional capability across Fiji’s public sector.

Speaking at the launch, Prime Minister Rabuka said the course responds to the growing need for capable, accountable, and principled leaders who can navigate increasingly complex national and global challenges.

“Fiji stands at an important point in its development journey, defined by both opportunity and increasing complexity. The demands placed upon our institutions continue to grow, requiring leadership that is collaborative, resilient, and firmly anchored in the public interest,” Hon. Rabuka said.

He noted that strong governance, accountability, and transparency remain fundamental to maintaining public trust and advancing sustainable national development.

The Executive Public Leadership Course brings together senior leaders from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Government ministries, public agencies, and partner institutions to strengthen leadership practice and enhance institutional effectiveness.

Prime Minister Rabuka highlighted the programme’s alignment with Fiji’s commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly the importance of effective, accountable, and transparent institutions in achieving national and global development goals.

“The successful realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals depends not only on policy frameworks but on the capability of leaders to drive innovation, foster resilience, and ensure meaningful implementation across all sectors,” he said.

The Prime Minister asserted the importance of strategic partnerships in strengthening leadership capacity and regional security.

Reaffirming Government’s commitment to leadership development, Hon. Rabuka said initiatives such as the Executive Public Leadership Course contribute to building a cohesive, resilient, and high-performing leadership cadre capable of delivering on Fiji’s national priorities.

Prime Minister Rabuka commended FNU for its role in developing future leaders through research-informed and practical learning approaches that bridge the gap between theory and governance practice.

He also expressed appreciation to the United States Embassy in Suva, the College of Southern Nevada, the Nevada National Guard State Partnership Programme, the RFMF, and other development partners whose support made the initiative possible.

In concluding, Hon.Rabuka cited retired United States General and former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who said: “Leadership is all about people. It is not about organisations. It is not about plans. It is not about strategies. It is all about people—motivating people to get the job done.”

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF THE REPUBLIC OF FIJI

On behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of Fiji, I extend warm birthday wishes to the President of the United States of America, President Donald J. Trump. We wish him good health, strength and wisdom in his leadership.

Fiji also welcomes the agreement reached between the United States and Iran, which signals a positive step towards de-escalation and dialogue during a period of heightened global uncertainty. At a time when conflict has threatened regional and international stability, efforts that prioritise peace, diplomacy and mutual understanding are to be commended.

As a Pacific Island nation, Fiji has consistently advocated for our vision of the Pacific as an Ocean of Peace. We believe this principle extends beyond our region and should inspire all nations, including those in the Middle East and all parties involved in ongoing tensions, including Israel and its neighbours, to pursue peaceful solutions through dialogue and diplomacy. Lasting peace is essential not only for security but for the wellbeing and prosperity of people everywhere.

The easing of tensions has also contributed to a welcome reduction in global oil prices. For fuel dependent economies such as Fiji, which have borne the significant burden of elevated fuel costs and the resulting pressures on the cost of living, this development comes as a relief. Throughout this period of uncertainty, the Fijian Government has worked diligently to secure fuel supplies, provide relief measures to our people and safeguard our national interests to ensure the continued functioning of essential services and economic activity.

Lower fuel prices will help ease pressures on businesses, reduce operational costs, and provide much needed relief to Fijian families who have been affected by rising living expenses. We remain hopeful that continued stability in global markets will support economic recovery and resilience, particularly for small island developing states that are especially vulnerable to external shocks.

Fiji reaffirms its commitment to peace, international cooperation and multilateralism. We encourage all nations to continue choosing dialogue over conflict and partnership over division, in pursuit of a more secure and prosperous world for future generations.
