Opposition Member of Parliament Hon. Semi Koroilavesau is warning that Parliament must not become a place where the government uses its numerical majority to shut out the opposition — cautioning that the notion of our way or the highway has no place in a democratic Parliament.

Opposition Member of Parliament Hon. Semi Koroilavesau pressed FSC on their timeline for starting operations at all three sugar mills — calling on FSC to speak directly to farmers about the consequences of further delays. FSC warned that Fiji is running out of sugar and will have none left to sell locally by the end of the month if the mills do not start, regional Pacific Island sales have already been reduced to protect the local market and a critical US preferential shipment worth higher returns is also at risk.

Opposition Member of Parliament Hon. Semi Koroilavesau raised serious concerns at the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs hearing on the FSC 2024-2025 Annual Reports — questioning FSC directly on the alarming gap in Memorandum of Grower Agreement submissions, with Lautoka at only 4-6% compared to 60% at the same time last year. FSC confirmed that if submissions do not improve, a deferment of crushing at Rarawai mill may be necessary — threatening Fiji's sugar supply from as early as July.

Opposition Member of Parliament Hon. Faiyaz Koya is questioning why Fiji's biggest earning sector was given only 48 hours of deliberation on the Tourism Bill — asking where the urgency is when it comes to establishing proper tourism standards and registration requirements for an industry this critical to our economy.

At yesterday's Standing Committee hearing, Hon. Premila Kumar asked FSC to account for the $64 million raised from land sales — questioning what the money was used for and whether FSC retained enough land for future operations. FSC confirmed the funds were used to finance operations and repay loans, and that 80 to 90 percent of the land was sold to FNPF to keep it within government statutory bodies.

Residents of Lomolomo Village and Lomolomo Village Road in Lautoka have been without electricity since morning (Saturday). A concerned resident contacted me to raise this issue and express the difficulties being faced by the community. According to the resident, the Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) has informed affected households that power is expected to be restored on Monday. I am asking EFL why Monday, why this matter cannot be addressed today?

I urge EFL to address this matter as a priority and restore electricity as soon as possible to minimize the inconvenience to residents. I also call on the responsible Minister to look into the situation urgently and ensure that the issue is resolved without further delay.

At yesterday's Standing Committee hearing, Hon. Premila Kumar questioned whether FSC's production targets of 2 million tons of cane by 2028 and 2.25 million tons by 2030 are actually achievable — given that farmer numbers are decreasing, costs are rising and registered cane area has dropped from 75,000 hectares in 2023 to just 41,000 hectares today. FSC acknowledged that with current grant levels of only $4 million per year the 2 million ton target is unlikely to be achieved before 2032.

Opposition Member of Parliament Hon. Premila Kumar is reminding the FNPF that financial performance alone is not the measure of success — the true measure is whether ordinary workers can retire with dignity after decades of contribution.

At yesterday's Standing Committee hearing, Hon. Premila Kumar challenged FSC's reported profit of $105.71 million in 2025 — pointing out that this figure is misleading because it was entirely driven by the government's $200 million debt write-off and an EXIM Bank grant, not actual operational performance. She called on FSC to properly qualify its reporting rather than give the false impression that the corporation made a genuine profit.

At yesterday's Standing Committee hearing, Hon. Premila Kumar pressed FSC on exactly how much land it currently owns, how much has been sold and how much remains — commending FSC for keeping land sales within government statutory bodies rather than selling to the private sector, but seeking full transparency on the corporation's remaining land assets.
