CONSULTATION ON THE REVIEW OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACT 1972
The review of the Local Government Act 1972 is currently being undertaken across all Municipal centers, marking a significant step toward developing a more modern, comprehensive, and responsive legislative framework for local governance. The consultation process commenced in Suva on 21 April 2026 and continued onto the Western Division, thereafter, before moving to the Northern Division and Levuka in the first week of May. This nationwide engagement is designed to gather views from stakeholders, ratepayers, residents, Municipal Councils, and the public to ensure that the revised Act reflects current challenges and aligns with best practices.
The Ministry of Local Government team, in collaboration with consultant Michael Morris from the Invercargill City Council (ICC) in New Zealand, is leading these consultations. Mr. Morris, who serves as Manager Governance and Legal at ICC, brings valuable expertise in local government legislation and governance. Together, the team is engaging directly with Municipal stakeholders across Fiji to ensure that the revised Act is inclusive, practical, and well-suited to the evolving needs of municipalities.
Online, Written submission and Comments are also welcomed until 29 May 2026.
