ROAD SAFETY REMINDER: Every Decision Behind the Wheel Matters

The Land Transport Authority extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of those who recently lost their lives in tragic road crashes, including the incident in Vatukoula this morning, which claimed the lives of four people.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining proper control of your vehicle at all times and adhering to speed limits.

LTA is encouraging all drivers to exercise responsible and considerate decision-making whenever they get behind the wheel, particularly when transporting passengers.

Every passenger places their trust in the driver to get them to their destination safely. That responsibility should never be taken lightly.

Road safety precautions and safe driving practices are not just recommendations. They can be the difference between life and death.

Driving to the conditions, staying alert, maintaining full control of your vehicle, and complying with speed limits can significantly reduce the risk of serious and fatal crashes.

Every road user has a role to play in making our roads safer for themselves, their passengers, and others.

Choose safety. Slow down. Stay focused. Arrive alive.

Road safety is everyone's responsibility.

LTA EQUIPS SCHOOLS WITH ROAD SAFETY PATROL GEAR TO PROMOTE SAFER ROADS

SUVA, Fiji: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) in partnership with CJ Patel (Pacific) PTE LTD distributed road patrol equipment, school road safety pledge board and posters to four schools in Tailevu, a move aimed at strengthening road safety awareness and protecting young pedestrians.

The handover ceremony, held yesterday at Nakelo District School, brought together school teachers and students in a shared commitment to improving safety around school zones.

LTA Acting Chief Operations Officer Mosese Foalo says the initiative reflects the Authority’s commitment to protecting children and promoting safer roads around schools.

“Every morning, thousands of school children step out of their homes trusting adults, drivers and regulators to keep them safe. This handover is our promise that we take that responsibility seriously,” he said.

The school patrol equipment, generously donated by the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF), included traffic cones, A-frame signs, high-visibility reflective vests, and lollipop stop signs.

CJ Patel (Pacific) PTE LTD further supported the initiative by donating raincoats, umbrellas, road safety pledge board, and educational road safety posters.

These items are designed to empower school patrol teams to safely manage pedestrian crossings during school peak hours.

School equipment were distributed to Dravo District School, Cautata District School, Nakelo District School and, Nuku District School.

TEXTING CAN WAIT. YOUR LIFE CAN’T!

Taking your eyes off the road for even a few seconds to read or send a text can have devastating consequences. A moment of distraction is all it takes to miss a hazard, drift into another lane, or cause a serious crash.

When you're behind the wheel, your full attention should be on driving. No message, notification, or social media update is worth risking your life or the lives of others.

Stay focused. Stay alert. Put the phone away and drive safely.

MEDIA STATEMENT: LTA CLARIFIES MEDIA REPORT ON ILLEGAL PSV OPERATIONS, CONTINUES PROACTIVE ENFORCEMENT

Suva, Fiji – Recent media reports suggesting that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has not taken action to curb illegal Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operations are inaccurate and do not reflect the extensive enforcement work being undertaken by the Authority to address the issue.

LTA continues to actively monitor, detect and take enforcement action against individuals operating private and commercial vehicles as public service vehicles without the required permits and licences. Through routine compliance activities and targeted enforcement operations, the Authority has consistently identified and penalised offenders engaged in illegal PSV activities.

In 2024, LTA issued a total of 1,363 Traffic Infringement Notices (TINs) to drivers found operating illegally as public service vehicles. This number increased significantly in 2025, with 2,398 TINs issued. The substantial increase in infringements detected in 2025 highlights the strengthening of LTA's enforcement efforts and reflects enhanced compliance operations, increased surveillance, and improved detection of illegal PSV operators.

For 2026, enforcement efforts continue to remain robust, with 1,873 TINs issued year-to-date for illegal PSV operations. A further 46 vehicles have been impounded while the Authority had issued final warnings to six individuals and suspended the driver licences for 10 individuals for six months following showcause proceedings for illegal PSV operations.

LTA works closely with the Fiji Police Force and other stakeholders in conducting joint enforcement operations and compliance activities to identify and deter illegal operators.

Individuals found operating public transport services without the required permits or approvals may face enforcement action under the provisions of the Land Transport Act and associated regulations. Depending on the nature and severity of the offence, penalties may include infringement notices, fines of up to $2000, showcause summoning, impounding of unlicensed/illegal PSV, and other regulatory actions permitted under the law.

Members of the public should use only licensed and regulated taxi services and to refrain from engaging private or illegal PSV operators. Passengers should ensure the PSV they use displays a valid permit, approved identification, and operates in accordance with LTA requirements.

The Authority encourages responsible journalism and notes that news media have an important role in ensuring reporting is accurate, fair, balanced and based on verified information. This is essential to maintaining public confidence and ensuring the public is not misled by inaccurate or incomplete information regarding regulatory and enforcement activities.

Public safety remains the Authority's highest priority, and the Authority is encouraging members of the public to utilise licensed and authorised transport services and report suspected illegal PSV activities to the authorities – text to 582 or email [email protected].

LTA CONTINUES PROACTIVE ENFORCEMENT AGAINST ILLEGAL PSV OPERATIONS

Contrary to recent media reports suggesting that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is not taking action against illegal public service vehicle (PSV) operations, the Authority remains actively engaged in monitoring, detecting, and addressing these unlawful activities through ongoing compliance initiatives and targeted enforcement operations.

Enforcement operations targeting illegal taxi and PSV operators are conducted regularly throughout the year as part of the Authority’s broader road transport compliance and enforcement programme. These operations are undertaken independently by LTA enforcement officers and, where necessary, in collaboration with the Fiji Police Force through joint enforcement exercises.

These enforcement efforts are focused on areas where illegal transport activities are prevalent and are intended to safeguard passengers, uphold regulatory compliance, and maintain a fair and competitive operating environment for licensed transport operators.

In addition to enforcement, the Authority continues to engage with communities and stakeholders to raise awareness about the risks associated with using illegal transport services and the importance of supporting licensed and regulated operators.

Where offences are detected, appropriate enforcement action is taken. LTA remains committed to protecting public safety, ensuring compliance with the law, and upholding the integrity of Fiji’s transport sector.

SPEEDING COSTS LIVES – SLOW DOWN, STAY IN CONTROL!

Speeding remains one of the leading contributors to loss of steering control, reducing a driver's ability to react to hazards, navigate bends safely, and maintain control of their vehicle. In a split second, one risky decision can result in a tragedy that changes lives forever.

Saving lives on our roads starts with you, whether you are a driver, passenger, or pedestrian. It costs nothing to be a responsible road user, but one wrong choice can cost a life.

That life could be someone's child, brother, sister, mother, father, friend, or workmate. It could be someone you love. Worse still, it could be you.

Start today. Choose responsibility over risk. Drive within speed limits, obey traffic regulations, and follow road safety measures at all times.

Road safety is a shared responsibility. Every choice you make on our road matters. Every life matters.
