Fiji Climate Outlook: June to August 2026 🌦️

An El Niño Watch is currently in place, with an increasing likelihood of El Niño developing during the June to August 2026 period.

Historically, El Niño has often been associated with below-normal rainfall in Fiji, particularly during the Cool/Dry Season. However, its impacts can vary, and rainfall patterns may differ across the country as local weather systems can still bring periods of rain.

While El Niño can increase the risk of prolonged dry conditions and potential drought, it is important to remember that no two El Niño events are the same. Past events have affected Fiji differently, highlighting the need to remain informed and prepared rather than relying on past experiences alone.

Global climate agencies indicate that the developing El Niño could strengthen in the coming months, although there remains uncertainty regarding its intensity and its exact impacts on Fiji.

🎥 Watch our latest Climate Outlook video for a detailed update on what to expect for June to August 2026.

A Climate refresher training was conducted by Fiji Meteorological Service for Sugar Research Institute of Fiji and Fiji Sugar Corporation Field Officers in Labasa on 10th June, 2026.

The training focused on the current weekly and monthly sugar product issued by FMS and introduced officers to data entry at source platform. The data entry at source platform will enable SRIF and FSC officers enter climate data efficiently and at the same time strengthen data collection capacity across Sugarcane growing areas in Fiji. Strengthening data collection initiatives will help improve seasonal forecast and assist the Sugar industry in planning, planting, irrigation and harvesting.

The training was delivered through the Climate and Oceans Support Program in the Pacific (COSPPac) Phase 3, which is funded by Australian Government's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).

🌊 Damaging Heavy Swells Expected from Thursday

Residents, mariners, fishers, and coastal communities in the southwest of Viti Levu, Lau Waters, Koro Sea, and Kadavu Passage are advised to exercise extreme caution as damaging heavy swells of up to 4.0 metres are expected to develop from Thursday.

Heavy swells can create dangerous sea conditions, strong currents, and large breaking waves along exposed coastlines, even when weather conditions appear fair.

⚠️ Safety Advice:
• Avoid unnecessary activities near exposed coastlines, reefs, and seawalls.
• Small craft operators and fishers should closely monitor weather and marine updates before heading out to sea.
• Swimmers and recreational users are urged to stay out of affected waters.
• Secure boats and coastal property where necessary.
• Follow advice issued by local authorities and emergency agencies.

A Climate refresher training was conducted by Fiji Meteorological Service for Sugar Research Institute of Fiji and Fiji Sugar Corporation Field Officers at SRIF office in Drasa on 8th June, 2026. The training focused on the current weekly and monthly sugar product issued by FMS and introduced officers to data entry at source platform.

The training provided an opportunity for participants to share feedback on the usefulness of the Fiji Sugarcane Rainfall Outlook which is a joint product of the Fiji Meteorological Service and the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji. The product provides advisories to the farmers and key sugar industry stakeholders on climate abnormalities for informed decision-making. During discussions, participants highlighted the challenges faced by farmers in accessing weather and climate information and provided suggestions to improve accessibility.

The training was delivered through Climate and Oceans Support Program in the Pacific (COSPPac) Phase 3, which is funded by Australian Government's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).
