Members of the Diplomatic Community in Addis Ababa today joined the celebration of Africa Freedom Day held at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, H.E. Albert Muchanga, was among the distinguished participants at the event.

Speaking during a Panel Discussion, Ambassador Muchanga emphasized the need for African economies to grow at a rate of between 7 to 10 percent in order to create the much-needed employment opportunities for the continent’s growing population. He noted that when citizens begin to see tangible economic benefits, they will appreciate that the African Union is working for them.

The Ambassador further stressed the importance of the free movement of people, goods and services through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a key driver towards achieving meaningful African integration and shared prosperity across the continent as well as a major non tariff barrier in intra-African trade.

His Excellency Albert Muchanga, Ambassador of the Republic of Zambia to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and UNECA, today chaired the Joint Sitting of the PRC Subcommittees on General Supervision and Coordination on Budgetary, Financial and Administrative Matters (GSCBFAM), Programmes and Conferences, and the F15 Technical Experts on behalf of the Ambassador of Kenya.

In his remarks, Ambassador Muchanga emphasized the importance of strengthening the African Union’s financial sustainability, enhancing domestic resource mobilization, and promoting accountability and prudent financial management across the continent.

The Ambassador further called on Member States to continue working collectively towards a stronger, self-reliant, and prosperous Africa guided by the spirit of solidarity and Pan-Africanism.

The meeting, held in Addis Ababa, brought together Ambassadors, Permanent Representatives, technical experts, and officials from the African Union Commission for important deliberations on budgetary, financial, administrative, and programme matters affecting the African Union.

This afternoon, 12 May 2026, the Ambassador of the Republic of Zambia to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Mr. Albert Muchanga, signed the Book of Condolences at the Embassy of the Republic of Botswana in Addis Ababa following the passing of the Former President of the Republic of Botswana, His Excellency Dr. Festus Mogae.

Dr. Mogae, who served as the third President of Botswana from 1998 to 2008, passed away in Gaborone, Botswana, on 8 May 2026 at the age of 86. He is remembered for his distinguished leadership, commitment to good governance, economic stewardship, and efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

In his message of condolence, Ambassador Muchanga conveyed heartfelt sympathies to the Government and people of Botswana, wishing them strength, comfort, and peace during this period of mourning, while paying tribute to the late Dr. Mogae’s lasting contribution to Botswana and the African continent.

This afternoon, the Zambian Ambassador to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU) and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) His Excellency Albert Muchanga held a cordial and productive engagement with his counterpart from the Kyrgyzstan Republic, His Excellency Adylbek Tultemirov, who paid a courtesy call at the Zambia Mission in Addis Ababa.

The Zambian Mission in Addis Ababa is elated by the official induction of Ms. Ruth Kangwa as an African Union Youth Ambassador for Peace (AYAP) for Southern Africa, held at the African Union Commission alongside other regional youth ambassadors from across the continent. The engagement marked an important milestone as the ambassadors were formally oriented and integrated into their continental roles in advancing the Youth, Peace and Security agenda.

During a courtesy engagement with the Chargé d’Affaires, Mr. Nawa Sibongo, Ms. Kangwa was commended for representing Zambia in this important continental initiative. Emphasis was placed on the need for coordinated engagement with Zambian Missions across the region, as well as the significance of her dual role in advancing both African Union priorities and Zambia’s values in peacebuilding, governance, and youth participation.

Ms. Kangwa reaffirmed her commitment to working with young people across Southern Africa to promote peace, raise awareness on the risks of instability, and support inclusive governance processes. Zambia remains proud to be represented in this flagship African Union initiative and stands ready to support efforts that contribute to sustainable peace and youth empowerment across the continent.

Zambia is proudly participating in the ongoing 12th Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (28–30 April 2026).

Held under the theme “Turning the Tide: Transformative and Coordinated Actions for the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063 through Strengthened Partnerships,” the Forum highlights Africa’s collective commitment to sustainable development.

Zambia’s delegation, which includes Lusaka City Council Town Clerk Mr. Liftery Ndaba, is engaging with regional stakeholders to share experiences, strengthen partnerships, and advance sustainable urban development and governance.

This morning, His Excellency Chen Hai, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, paid a courtesy call on the Zambian Embassy in Addis Ababa.

During the visit, he held cordial discussions with His Excellency Ambassador Albert Muchanga, Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative.

The engagement focused on strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation and exploring opportunities for enhanced collaboration.

Today, Her Excellency Francisca Tatchouop Belobe, current African Union Commissioner for Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry, and Minerals (ETTIM), visited the Zambian Embassy in Addis Ababa, for a meeting with H.E. Albert Muchanga, Zambia's Ambassador to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). H.E. Muchanga is also the immediate past AU Commissioner for ETTIM.

The two discussed various continental issues like implementation of the strategic framework to achieve inclusive growth and sustainable development in Africa, accelerated implementation of the Agreement and Protocols of the African Continental Free Trade Area, positioning Africa to be more influential in the G20, minerals development with a focus on value addition at source, and, among others, industrialization with a special focus on clustering to enable small, medium and large scale enterprises supply to scale, the African Continental Free Trade Area market.

Zambia has been elected as the 3rd Vice Chair in the new Bureau of the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development of the United Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

The election took place
during the ongoing 58th Session of UNECA taking place in Tangier, Morocco, from 28th March to 3rd April 2026 under the theme “Growth through innovation: harnessing data and frontier technologies for the economic transformation of Africa”.

Zambia is represented in the meetings by H.E. Albert Muchanga, Zambia's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the African Union and UNECA, accompanied by H.E. Eliphas Chinyonga, Zambia's Ambassador to Morocco.

The UNECA Session comprises the Committee of Experts; and the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. It is one of the main fora for African Ministers responsible for finance, planning and economic development; and Governors of central banks, to discuss issues pertinent to the development agenda of Africa.
