We had a productive two weeks. Addis is getting more suited to develop children than ever before. We are working with partners who share our vision. We are more than proud to host the Vanleer Board team (chairman, CEO, and others) last week, where we discussed our progress and next directions together as a team.
We also received 2400 milk products from our new partner Miralac for our kids in publicly financed daycares.

አጋርነት
የአዲስ አበባ ከተማ አስተዳደር “የነገ ተስፋ ህጻናት ለአዲስ አበባ” በሚል መሪ ሃሳብ የልጆችን እድገት ከመነሻው ለማቅናት ያለመ የቀዳማይ ልጅነት ልማት ፕሮግራም እየተገበረ ይገኛል። የፕሮግራሙን ውጤታማነት ለማረጋገጥ መንግስት ከሰጠው ትልቅ ትኩረት ባሻገር ከተለያዩ አካላትጋር በሚፈጠሩ አጋርነቶች በጎ አሻራ ያላቸው ሥራዎች እየተሰሩ ናቸው። የአጋርነት ሥራውን በማጠናከር ፕሮግራሙን የሚያስተባብረው የስትራቴጂክ ፕሮግራሞች ማኔጅመንት ጽ/ቤት ዛሬ መስከረም 28/2018 ዓ.ም. ከአምስት ተቋማት ጋር የአጋርነት የመግባቢያ ሰነድ ተፈራርሟል።
በፊርማ ሥነ-ስርአቱ ላይ የጽ/ቤቱ ኃላፊ ዶ/ር እሸታየሁ ክንፉ የከተማ አስተዳደሩን የቀዳማይ ልጅነት ልማት ፕሮግራም ግቦችንና እስካሁን የተመዘገቡትን ውጤቶች ያወሱ ሲሆን ውጤቶቹን ለማጠናከርና ለማዝለቅ በዘርፉ ከሚሰሩ ድርጅቶችና ኩባኒያዎች ጋር የመስራት አስፈላጊነትን አጽንኦት ሰጥተዋል። የልጆችን እድገት ለማቅናት ስትራቴጂክ ጠቀሜታ ካላቸውና የሚጨበጥ ሥራ ከሚሰሩ ተቋማት ጋር ከተማ አስተዳደሩ መስራቱን እንደሚቀጥል በማስገንዘብ ዛሬ የመግባቢያ ስምምነት ለመፈራረም የቀረቡ ተቋማትም እነዚህን መስፈርቶች ያሟሉ መሆናቸው እንደተረጋገጠ ተናግረዋል።
በዚህ መሰረት የስትራቴጂክ ፕሮግራሞች ማኔጅመንት ጽ/ቤት ከ
1. FANA Association for Individuals with Learning Difficulties,
2. ከ Deborah Foundation,
3. ከ በአዲስ አበባ ከተማ አስተዳደር ቴአትር ቤቶች አስተዳደር ድርጅት የህጻናትና ወጣቶች ቴአትር,
4. ከ Tana EKT Trading PLC (T-EKT) እና
5. ከ ETHIOPIA READS ጋር በትብብር ለመስራት የመግባቢያ ሰነድ ተፈራርሟል።

Partnership Agreement
The Addis Ababa City Administration is implementing the Early Childhood Development Program under the theme " Children, the future Hope for Addis Ababa", which aims to shape children's development from an early age. Beyond the strong focus given by the government, successful work with positive impact is being carried out through partnerships with various stakeholders to ensure the program's effectiveness.
The Strategic Programs Management Office, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaboration with five institutions today, October 8, 2025.
During the signing ceremony, Dr. Eshetayehu Kinfu, the Head of the Strategic Program Management Office, recalled the goals of the City Administration's Early Childhood Development Program and the results achieved so far. He emphasized the need to work with organizations and companies that operate in the sector to strengthen and sustain these results. He affirmed that the City Administration will continue to work with institutions that have strategic significance for shaping children's development and are engaged in tangible work, and he confirmed that the institutions presented today for the signing of the MoU have met these criteria.
Accordingly, the Strategic Programs Management Office signed an MoU for collaboration with:
1. FANA Association for children with Learning Difficulties
2. Deborah Foundation
3. Children's and Youth Theater, part of the Addis Ababa City Administration Theater Houses Administration Organization
4. Tana EKT Trading PLC (T-EKT)
5. ETHIOPIA READS

Community-Owned Initiatives: A Model for Sustainable Development
When a program is genuinely embraced and owned by the community it serves, its impact extends far beyond its initial scope. We are observing this transformative effect within certain communities in Addis Ababa, where childcare programs have evolved into crucial sources of livelihood.
A notable example is the Lemikura Arabsa Selam Mender community, whose leaders recently hosted a graduation ceremony for five of their members. These individuals' six-month training was sponsored by the community itself, a unique model that culminated in their employment within the community's childcare centers. This innovative approach, where the community takes full responsibility for developing and employing its workforce, offers valuable insights and a compelling precedent. We anticipate that this successful community-led initiative will inspire similar endeavors in other communities

Children: The Future Hope of Addis Ababa 🌱
Addis Ababa is on a transformational journey, not just to grow into a modern African capital, but to become the best city in which to raise children.
In just three years, the city envisioned developing 12,000 playgrounds across neighborhoods, schools, riverside areas, and public spaces, making play a right, not a privilege, for every child.
Therefore, the city is integrating the playgrounds in the newly developed playground in the Riverside Project near Piassa, a symbol of how infrastructure can be both beautiful and purposeful.
Under the visionary leadership of Mayor Adanech Abiebie, playgrounds are now integrated into all development projects, including major initiatives like the Corridor Development Project. This bold commitment to child-centered urban planning is

100 Million to 2.4 Billion.....

The Addis Ababa ECD program has expanded its efforts to reach all children, ensuring no one is left behind. The technical working group has reviewed our performance and planned our next move. The initiatives' coverage, workforce, quality, budget, and ownership by the sectors are now glowing more than ever before. We progressed from 100 million four years ago to 2.5 billion by the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year.

On July 8th, the city administration officially opened 1,155 new playgrounds and 122 sports fields that are designed for early childhood development. They also launched a bunch of other publicly funded daycares. This whole thing cost 5 billion birr, which just goes to show how visionary the city is to put money into our children. This is definitely a sign that the government is serious about this. It's a great start, and for sure we'll see even more improvements down the road.

አዲስ አበባ የልጅነት ልማት ላይ ያደረገው ጥረት በቅርቡ በተካሄደው የአፍሪካ የህፃናት እንክብካቤ ጉባኤ ላይ በጉልህ ታየ። ዶ/ር አበበ ነጌሶ ከስትራቴጂክ ቢሮአችን በፓነሊስትነት ተሳትፈዋል። ዶ/ር መሰረት ዘላለም AFC-ECDን ወክለው ነበር። ከዋና አጋሮቻችን አንዱ የሆነው የቫን ሊር ፋውንዴሽን የአፍሪካ ክልል ዳይሬክተር ወይዘሮ ካሪማ ግራንትም ለውይይቱ አስተዋፅኦ አድርገዋል።

ለአፍሪካ ህብረት፣ ለአፌሲኤን እና ለተባባሪዎቻችን ምስጋና ይድረሳችሁ።

Addis Ababa’s Early Childhood Development efforts were prominently represented at the recent Africa Conference on Childcare. Dr. Abebe Negesso from our Strategic Bureau participated as a panelist, Dr. Meseret Zelalem represented the Africa Center of Excellence, and Mrs. Karima Grant, the Africa Regional Director of the Van Leer Foundation, one of our key partners, also took part in the discussions.
