National Symposium Held to Combat Illegal Migration and Human Trafficking

The Federal Law and Justice Institute, in collaboration with Samara University, hosted a national symposium aimed at curbing the severe challenges of illegal migration and human trafficking.
The symposium commenced with a welcoming speech by Mr. Ali Zeynu Adem, Vice President for Research (DRTTVP), followed by an opening speech from Dr. Abdurahman, Academic Vice President (AVP) of Samara University.
In his keynote speech, H.E. Dr. Zekarias Erkolla, Deputy Director General of the Federal Law and Justice Institute, emphasized the critical need to build strong linkages between academic research and practical law enforcement to effectively dismantle sophisticated, transnational human trafficking networks.
During the event, six research papers focusing on the current state of migration and human trafficking in Ethiopia were presented by various scholars:
Prem Sam Ponniah (Ph.D.) presented his research titled "Human Trafficking and Irregular Migration in Ethiopia: South Omo–Turkana Transits," highlighting localized vulnerabilities along major transit routes.
Mr. Abdushukur Nursela provided a comprehensive overview under the title "Addressing Illegal Migration and Human Trafficking: Policy, Legal, and Institutional Frameworks," identifying key areas requiring reform for legislative and law enforcement bodies.
Mr. Tsalafu Chaka presented a research paper titled "Ethiopia's Implementation of AU Migration Policy Framework across Moyale Border."
Mr. Solomon Anteneh shared his study with the audience, titled "Gendered Pathways of Migration and Trafficking in Ethiopia."
A paper tracing the transition from displacement to exploitation, titled "From Forced Migration to Human Trafficking: Risk Factors and Legal Responses," was presented by Mr. Shishigu Abi Adimasu.
Mr. Muluken Zemene presented a paper evaluating media responsibilities, titled "The Role of Media in Reducing Illegal Migration and Human Trafficking."
Following the presentations, participants raised numerous questions and constructive ideas, which were addressed with detailed explanations and responses from the presenters.
In its conclusion, the symposium underscored that ensuring sustainable prevention of illegal migration and human trafficking requires enacting policy reforms, strengthening legal responses, and significantly improving border control management.
This forum is an annual event hosted rotationally by selected universities incorporating Ethiopian law schools, drawing participation from prominent legal professionals, researchers, and policymakers.
