XotximDiez is a wonderful little house in the Valencian village of Sella, near Alicante, Spain The surroundings echo its historic Moorish past.

The village of Sella nestles in the mountains, less than 20 km inland from the beaches of the Costa Blanca, in the Spanish region of Valencia. Here the streets were made when donkeys were the only means of transport and the pace of life remains relaxed. Ubiquitous walled terraces on all the steep valley sides are covered with almond blossom in early Spring. Olives are also harvested in abundance.

Above the terraces, pine forests are still home to wild boar. Dramatic limestone cliffs envelope the valleys and provide a playground for rock climbers, especially in the cooler winter months. Walkers can amble along the quiet paths that meander between the terraces and along the fertile valleys.

The ninth stage of the Vuelta will unfold entirely within the province of Alicante and proceed along the Costa Blanca. It will depart from Torrevieja, pass through Villajoyosa, very close to Sella, and arrive at the Cumbre del Sol, in the town of Benitachell.

The Puerto de Tudons from Sella climb features in the tough Gran Fondo sportive Tour del Juguete and is part of the training program of many pro riders who come winter training in Costa Blanca.

The first part of the climb may lure you into thinking it is a peace of cake, but as the road keeps twisting higher and higher into the mountain you will start feeling the climbing getting tougher and tougher. Still, the gradient doesn’t really go above 10% at any point during the climb.

With a good rhythm and a steady pace, Puerto de Tudons is a joy and can be climbed even by less experienced riders who are not in top form. Recommended climb to all cyclists who come to Costa Blanca.
