Meliá Hotels International Chairman and CEO Gabriel Escarrer, and President of Spain Nightlife and Palladium Hotel Group executive José Luis Benítez, have been awarded an Honorary MBE by HM King Charles III for their services to British nationals in Spain.

Through investment, awareness-raising campaigns and public-private partnerships, Gabriel Escarrer has promoted responsible tourism in the Balearic Islands, while demonstrating a longstanding commitment to the British economy during his 25 years of hotel operations in the UK.

The award also recognises Mr Benítez’s commitment to the safety of British visitors in Ibiza, promoting the implementation of measures to prevent sexual harassment, assault and drink spiking, and supporting the UK Government's Stick With Your Mates campaign.

Congratulations!

Watching the 12 August eclipse from Spain? 🌘☀️

If you're planning to enjoy this spectacular event, make sure you're doing it safely.

✅ Use certified eclipse glasses only. The Spanish consumer authorities remind viewers that safe eclipse glasses must comply with the ISO 12312-2 standard, have undergone an EU conformity assessment, include an EU Declaration of Conformity, and carry the CE marking. Buy them from official retailers or specialist shops, and keep them on throughout the viewing period. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe for looking directly at the Sun.

🚗 Expect travel disruption in areas with the best views. Spain's traffic authority (DGT) expects significantly increased traffic towards the eclipse's path of totality, with up to 1.5 million additional journeys possible. Delays are likely, particularly before and after the event. If you're travelling to watch the eclipse, plan ahead, use authorised viewing locations and never stop on the roadside or hard shoulder to watch or photograph the eclipse.

🔭 For official information on where and how to view the eclipse safely, visit the Spanish Government's dedicated website. The site includes visibility maps, viewing advice, events and practical information to help you make the most of this once-in-a-generation experience:
