The Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid (ICMM) is an institute of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC) (Spanish National Research Council) founded in December 1986, that belongs to the Area of Science and Technology of Materials, one of the eight Areas in which the CSIC divides its research activities.

🗣Cristina Dipollina () is a young Italian who started last April at the ICMM as a predoctoral researcher. She is working at the Quantum materials for quantum technologies group (Q4Q). She is form Naples, where she completed both a master and a bachelor degree in physics at University Federico II.

💃What have you worked on so far?
During my undergraduate studies I focused my energies on learning about condensed matter physics with a theoretical prospective. Indeed, my master thesis was focused on studying with DFT calculations bilayer-graphene based heterostructures, with a particular focus on spin-orbit coupling features, and I also explored how these features can be tuned through twist and pressure.

💃What will you work on? With whom?
My PhD is co-supervised by María José Calderon and Leni Bascones in the quantum materials for quantum technologies group.
Following my interest in twisted materials, I will work on moiré systems in particular on twisted bilayer graphene, I’m going to investigate with different theoretical techniques the interplay between strong correlation and topology, aiming to better understand the many phases that appear in this material.

💃Why ICMM?
ICMM feels like the right place for the path I want to follow in science. It is a very prestigious institute, but also a place where I can keep learning and growing in an interdisciplinary environment. I also really like the idea of being in contact with people from different backgrounds and cultures, both professionally and personally.

💃And a personal touch: any hobbies?
I love dancing — I might even say I’m addicted to it! In particular, I take Lindy Hop and solo jazz classes. I also love reading and binge-watching TV series. I have an analogue camera, and I enjoy using it to capture special moments.

💃What would you like to contribute to the institute?
At ICMM, I would like to take part in outreach activities and share science with other PhD students and the wider community.

🔚 Our serie of Scientific Seminars has closed this thursday with ICMM researchers Rui. E. F. Silva y Álvaro Jiménez Galán, who taked about 'Strong field physics in solids from a Wannier perspective'.

🗣This is the end of a productive year in which we have presented the various lines of research currently being pursued at the ICMM.

We look forward to continuing this work next year!

🔬¡Se acaba el curso! El pasado viernes recibimos a alumnos y alumnas de 1º de Bachillerato del de Madrid, nuestra última visita guiada de este curso escolar.

👩‍🔬Estas visitas son posibles gracias al gran interés de los centros educativos por nuestro trabajo, pero, sobre todo, al esfuerzo que dedican nuestros investigadores e investigadoras por acercar la ciencia a los estudiantes, como nuestras Eva Gª Frutos (.frutos ) y Marga Darder (, que han estado nada menos que 10 años coordinando las visitas guiadas al instituto.

🧪La pasion por la divulgación siembra la semilla de nuevos investigadores e investigadoras.

📸CSIC Investiga... ¡en cuántica! 💫
✨Nuestra investigadora Leni Bascones participó la semana pasada en el evento de presentación de la revista, que tuvo lugar en y contó además con la presencia de la presidenta del CSIC, Eloísa del Pino.
💎Este número de la revista aborda algunas de las investigaciones más destacadas de la institución en el área de la física cuántica. Esta disciplina disruptiva estudia la materia al nivel más microscópico y augura una revolución tecnológica, con aplicaciones que podrían ir desde la optimización de procesos industriales y bancarios, el refuerzo de la seguridad en las comunicaciones y el aumento de la precisión en las mediciones, hasta el desarrollo de nuevos materiales y fármacos.

🎨Al acto de presentación asistieron, además de Eloísa del Pino y Leni Bascones, Andrés Pérez Perruca, director del área de Innovación Cultural y Pensamiento Crítico de Fundación Telefónica. El evento también contó con la participación de los expertos en física cuántica Juan José García Ripoll, profesor de Investigación del CSIC, director del Quantum Advanced Research Center y experto en tecnologías cuánticas; Leni Bascones, investigadora científica del CSIC y experta en materiales cuánticos; Piedad Brox, científica titular del Instituto de Microelectrónica de Sevilla (IMSE-CNM - CSIC) y experta en ciberseguridad; y Alberto Casas, profesor de Investigación del CSIC, experto en física cuántica, divulgador y físico teórico. Además, se celebró una mesa redonda moderada por América Valenzuela, periodista y divulgadora científica.

🗣Daniel Rizo Molina () is proud of his roots in Talavera de la Reina, in the province of Toledo. "It’s known as the City of Ceramics," he explains. He is one of the new PhD researchers who joined the ICMM in recent months. He has become part of the Nanomagnetism and Magnetization Processes group.

🧲What have you worked on so far?
I have previous experience on nanomagnetism from my bachelor and master thesis at the Materials Science Department in UCM. My bachelor thesis focused on nanomagnetism for energy applications, and my master thesis focused on magnetostrictive thin films.

🧲 What will you work on? With whom?
I will work on the tuning of magnetic properties by external stimuli, e.g. changes on the magnetic anisotropy induced by strain. I will be supervised by Miriam Jaafar.

🧲 Why ICMM?
ICMM is suited with a wide range of experimental techniques that allow for essential characterization of magnetic structures, and the Group of Nanomagnetism and Magnetization Processes is full of experts in that subject.

🧲And a personal touch: any hobbies?
I usually go to the gym for health and for fun, but I also like playing videogames and I enjoy modding computers with my own hands.

🧲What would you like to contribute to the institute?
I would like to give the best of me while I am here, and build good memories with my coworkers.
