Gawad Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier Para sa Sampung (10) Pinakamatagal na Pilipino sa Spain at Andorra

Theme:
“Honoring the Pioneers. Celebrating a Legacy. Inspiring Future Generations.”

The Filipino community in Spain and the Principality of Andorra has grown steadily over the past several decades. Behind this vibrant and dynamic community are pioneering Filipinos who chose Spain and Andorra as their second home during periods when opportunities were scarce and migration was far more challenging than it is today.

These pioneers endured cultural adjustment, language barriers, economic uncertainty, and social integration challenges. Through resilience, determination, and hard work, they built lives that not only provided better opportunities for their families but also helped establish the positive reputation enjoyed by Filipinos in Spain and Andorra today.

They quietly contributed to society through honest labor, unwavering commitment to their families, and active participation in community life.

Their stories are more than personal journeys—they form an important chapter in the history of the Filipino diaspora in Europe. Their experiences embody the enduring Filipino values of sipag, tiyaga, katatagan, malasakit, bayanihan, and pagmamahal sa pamilya. They have also contributed to strengthening the people-to-people ties that underpin the longstanding friendship between the Philippines and Spain.

The "Gawad Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier Para sa Sampung (10) Pinakamatagal na Pilipino sa Spain at Andorra" is the brainchild project of Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier. Initiated in 2018, this prestigious award aims to honor exceptional, long-standing individuals and preserve their legacy for future generations of overseas Filipinos. First established in 2018, the upcoming fourth edition of the Gawad APJL will serve as one of the flagship projects commemorating the 79th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between the Philippines and Spain.

The Philippines and Spain are taking further steps to strengthen social security protection and make benefits more accessible to Filipinos living and working in Spain.

Philippine Ambassador to Spain Philippe J. Lhuillier recently met with Social Security System (SSS) President and CEO Robert Joseph M. De Claro to discuss enhanced services for the Filipino community, including progress toward the conclusion and signing of the Administrative Agreement implementing the Convention on Social Security between the Philippines and Spain.

Once implemented, the framework will provide clearer procedures for combining eligible insurance periods under the Philippine and Spanish systems, accessing benefits regardless of residence, avoiding double social security contributions in applicable cases, and facilitating claims and coordination between the two countries.

These efforts will be complemented by the reopening of the SSS Representative Office at the Philippine Embassy in Madrid on 11 September 2026, providing our kababayans in Spain with more direct and accessible assistance for their SSS concerns and transactions.

The initiative reflects the continuing commitment of the Philippine Government and the Embassy to bring essential government services closer to Filipinos in Spain and ensure that their social security rights and benefits remain protected.
