THE ROYAL ORDER OF THE STAR OF OCEANIA

The Royal Order of the Star of Oceania was instituted on 16 December 1886 by His Majesty King David Kalākaua, Sovereign of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi.

Created during the final years of the Hawaiian monarchy, the Order formed part of the system of royal honours established under King Kalākaua. It was intended to recognize distinguished service and to honour those who contributed to the interests and influence of the Hawaiian Kingdom, particularly within the wider Pacific world.

Its establishment reflected an important aspect of Kalākaua’s reign: his vision of Hawaiʻi as an independent Pacific kingdom with its own diplomatic, cultural, and political role among the nations and peoples of Oceania. The King sought to strengthen relations throughout the Pacific and to affirm Hawaiʻi’s place within the international community.

The Order took its name from the Pacific itself. Its Hawaiian designation, Ka Hoku O Osiania, meaning “The Star of Oceania”, expressed the broader Pacific dimension of the Hawaiian Kingdom and the outward looking vision associated with Kalākaua’s monarchy.

The insignia of the Order incorporated symbols connected with the Hawaiian Crown and the Pacific, reflecting both the sovereignty of the Kingdom and the ideals represented by royal service and distinction.

Founded only a few years before the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893, the Royal Order of the Star of Oceania remains an important historical witness to the institutions, diplomacy and ceremonial traditions of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi during the reign of King Kalākaua.

Today, its history forms part of the wider heritage of the Hawaiian monarchy and recalls a period in which Hawaiʻi stood as an internationally recognized sovereign kingdom with its own Crown, diplomatic relations, honours and institutions.

La crisis migratoria que vive Ceuta ha vuelto a situar al rey Felipe VI en el centro de la atención institucional. En momentos de alta tensión, cada movimiento de la Jefatura del Estado adquiere un significado especial, ya que representa la continuidad y la estabilidad del país mientras las autoridades buscan contener una situación que ha captado la atención de toda Europa.

Aunque las decisiones operativas corresponden al Gobierno, la figura del Rey conserva un importante peso simbólico. Su seguimiento de la evolución de la crisis transmite un mensaje de cercanía con las instituciones y con quienes trabajan para hacer frente a una emergencia que pone a prueba la capacidad de respuesta del Estado y reabre el debate sobre el control de las fronteras.

Más allá de la coyuntura actual, lo que ocurra en Ceuta podría influir en futuras decisiones sobre política migratoria y cooperación internacional. En este contexto, la presencia institucional de Felipe VI refuerza la imagen de una Corona que busca acompañar al país en los momentos de mayor complejidad, mientras España afronta uno de los desafíos más sensibles de los últimos años.
