Sierra Bermeja Nature Reserve - Malaga/Spain

The Junta de Andalucía, who are managing the new Sierra de las Nieves National Park, are applying to the European Commission to reorganise the Sierra de las Nieves SCI (Site of Community Importance) to include more than 9000 hectares from the Sierra Blanquilla and Sierra Bermeja y Real SCIs, apparently with the aim of facilitating management of this national park.

Currently, these sierras are included as separate entities in the Natura 2000 Network and are protected as SACs (Special Areas of Conservation) on a European level.

The territorial range of the Sierra de las Nieves SCI will increase from its current 20,131 hectares to 29,575 hectares, which will include 930 hectares of Sierra Blanquilla, 8,268 hectares of Sierras Bermeja y Real together with 245 hectares of Sierra de las Nieves that are not currently included in the Natura Network.

Are they planning to deconstruct Sierra Bermeja? This Sierra was identified by the Mármol Carvajal in the 16th century who defined its geographical limits as being between the Sierra de Arboto (Sierra Real, Istán) and the Puerto de los Guardas (Los Reales, Casares). This geographical unit should not be subject to any administrative fragmentation.

Mayors, environmentalists and even a platform created more than a decade ago, 'Plataforma Sierra Bermeja, Parque Nacional', have been demanding for years that this terrain of peridotite and pinsapos should also be recognised as a National Park, and even requested that both sierras, Bermeja and de las Nieves, should form a single national park.

Sierra Bermeja is the greatest treasure of biodiversity in the province of Malaga. Those who do not recognise this fact are short-sighted. The whole of Malaga province should have taken to the streets to defend this magnificent ecological museum.

This natural monument cannot be put up for sale. Only fools confuse value with price. Sierra Bermeja has such a high inherent value that you cannot put a price on it. Using Sierra Bermeja as an economic commodity is unforgivable.

The “Plataforma Sierra Bermeja, Parque Nacional" will not cease to insist on the highest level of protection, on all possible levels, for the whole of Sierra Bermeja.

This Saturday, 3 December between 16:00 and 21:00, GRUNSBER will be at the Mercadillo Solidario at Plaza Antonia Guerrero in Estepona.

As well as providing information on the Natural History of the Sierra Bermeja, volunteers from GRUNSBER (Grupo Naturalista Sierra Bermeja) will be presenting the Sierra Bermeja Calendar for 2023 (€10) and the popular 3D Map of the Sierra Bermeja (€15).

All proceeds go towards financing the important educational work they carry out at local schools and for the general public. Professional and extremely knowledgeable volunteers regularly dedicate their time in bringing awareness to the botanical, zoological, geological and environmental aspects of this unique mountain range.

The calendar features very attractive, high quality photographs and space for daily notes (size 30 x 43 cm).

The 3D map (40 X 60 cm, scale 1:70,000) includes the Sierra Bermeja, Sierra Crestellina, Sierra Palmitera, Sierra Real and Sierra Blanca of Marbella/Ojen. The map covers the coastal range between Estepona and Marbella, up to Cortes de la Frontera and Parauta and includes the municipalities of Casares, Istan, Benahavis, Gaucin, Genalguacil, Algotocin etc.

Both would make ideal Christmas presents 🎄

Málaga is planning several reforestation activities throughout the in order to counteract the effects of last year's fire. The tree of choice is cedar which is not autochthonous! This activity is counterproductive. Please help by voicing your concerns

Here is your chance to show your support for the protection of Sierra Bermeja. The Sierra needs time to regenerate after the fire of last year and does not need the huge influx of visitors from the Vuelta cycle stage which will finish at Los Reales.
