FLOODS IN NEPAL
On August 26, a massive glacier collapsed along the Nepal- China border, triggering a massive rock-and-ice avalanche.
The avalanche swept many people into devastating flash floods.
More than 160 people were reported dead, and over 1,400 are missing.
The collapse appears to have been caused by an unstable Himalayan glacier resulting from global warming.
The floodwaters intensified as they slammed down the valleys of the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, generating enormous force.
The collapse generated seismic energy equivalent to a 5.2-magnitude earthquake. However, it has not been confirmed that an earthquake triggered the collapse.
The Global Geoparks Network (GGN) and its Geohazards Working Group extend heartfelt condolences to the affected communities and tourists.
