Why Are Memory Cards Getting So Expensive?
If you’ve recently checked the price of SD cards, microSD cards, USB drives or SSDs, you may have noticed something — prices are going up!
The main reason is NAND flash memory. NAND is the actual memory technology used inside memory cards, SSDs, USB drives and even smartphones.
One of the biggest reasons behind the current price increase is the huge demand for storage from AI and data centres. These companies need massive amounts of high-speed storage, so manufacturers are putting more production capacity into enterprise storage products.
At the same time, there is limited NAND production capacity for consumer products. When demand is high and supply is limited, prices naturally increase.
That’s why a memory card that used to be relatively cheap can now cost significantly more — especially 256GB, 512GB and 1TB cards.
For customers, this means it may be a good idea to compare prices before buying and avoid waiting too long if you actually need storage.
As someone working in the mobile business, I’m seeing these changes in the market directly.
