European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Awards recognise and commend excellence in the field of architecture.

The principal objectives are to recognise and commend excellence in the field of architecture and to draw attention to the important contribution of European professionals in the development of new concepts and technologies. The Prize also sets out to promote the profession by encouraging architects working throughout the entire European Union and by supporting young architects as they set off on their careers.

Frank McDonald (1950–2026)

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Frank McDonald, journalist, author and former member of the EUmies Awards Jury in 2019.

A passionate and influential voice on architecture, cities and urban planning, Frank contributed to the Award with his critical insight, curiosity and deep commitment to the quality of our built environment.

We remember him with great affection and gratitude, and send our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

EXHIBITION IN ROVANIEMI | ⚫ The EUmies Awards 2026 and the Young Talent 2025 Exhibitions arrive in , , at Lappia House

The EUmies Awards 2026 exhibition at Lappia House presents a comprehensive overview of the 410 selected, finalist, and winning works of the edition, coming from 40 countries and 143 regions, offering the public a cross-cutting reading of current trends in European architecture. Through graphic materials, documentation, and contextual content, the exhibition delves into the jury’s criteria and the social, cultural, and environmental challenges addressed by the projects, establishing itself as a space for dissemination, debate, and professional reflection.

The exhibition will remain open from 3 September to 4 October 2026, as Budapest becomes the first international venue to present the complete exhibition originally shown in Barcelona, following its photographic presentations in Bucharest, Varna, Oulu and Budapest.

On Saturday 29 August, the event “A Day in Meri Toppila” brought together local and international architecture voices at AaltoSiilo as part of Aalto Week.

The afternoon’s international programme featured Kati Laitinen, Head of the European Commission Representation in Finland. As part of the session, Ivan Blasi, Director of the EUmies Awards at Fundació Mies van der Rohe, presented the exhibition and discussed the selection process behind the 2026 edition, highlighting the key architectural debates and challenges addressed by this year’s awarded and finalist projects.

Following the exhibition and events at AaltoSiilo in Oulu, the showcase now moves to another Alvar Aalto landmark: the Lappia House in Rovaniemi, on view from 7 to 30 September.

🏢 Mextrópoli: Building Europe. Catalan Architectures | EUmies Awards 1988–2026 | The exhibition Building Europe. Catalan Architectures arrives in Mexico City as part of MEXTRÓPOLI 2026, in the year when Barcelona is the UNSECO/UIA World Capital of Architecture.

First presented in Brussels in 2025 and now updated to include the works from the 2026 EUmies Awards cycle, the exhibition brings together a selection of Catalan architectural projects nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Awards since 1988.

From the almost 200 Catalan projects in the EUmies Awards archive, the exhibition presents works that have been winners, finalists or shortlisted by international juries throughout the history of the Prize. Projects built in Catalonia or designed by Catalan studios in Europe that have contributed to transforming the territory while addressing some of today’s major challenges: social cohesion, the housing emergency, sustainability, innovation and the rehabilitation of existing heritage.

The exhibition is organised around six thematic areas exploring different ways of building and transforming our surroundings: new models of collective housing; public facilities and new urban centralities; the rehabilitation, reuse and transformation of existing architectures; the legacy of major events; building in the landscape; and a section dedicated to the 2026 cycle.

A reflection on Catalan architecture as a tool to build cities, transform territories and contribute to building Europe.

This past spring, the EUmies Awards 2026 Exhibition was presented at the Palau Victòria Eugènia as part of "What Is This? A Spa, a Gym, or a Tiny Animals Zoo?", a major exhibition organised by Fundació Mies van der Rohe within the programme of BCN_arquitectura World Capital of Architecture 2026.

The exhibition marked the first extensive presentation of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe Collection. Bringing together more than 500 pieces—including models, original drawings, videos, and materials from the ephemeral interventions at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion and the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture / Mies van der Rohe Awards since its first edition in 1988—it offered a unique journey through four decades of contemporary European architecture.

At the heart of the exhibition, the 40 shortlisted works of the EUmies Awards 2026 highlighted some of the most significant architectural achievements realised across Europe in recent years, connecting today's architectural debates with the history and legacy of the Prize. It also represented one of the last opportunities to experience the Palau Victòria Eugènia in its current form before its transformation into the future extension of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya.

→ This exhibition was part of the Barcelona 2026 World Capital of Architecture program (BCN_arquitectura), a distinction awarded by UNESCO i UIA World Congress of Architects Barcelona 2026 of to the city hosting the World Congress of Architects (UIA World Congress of Architects Barcelona 2026), turning it into a global forum for architecture, urban planning, and landscape design. From February 12 to December 13, a multidisciplinary program will be rolled out in collaboration with schools, universities, and professional and cultural organizations across Catalonia.

Barcelona 2026 World Capital of Architecture is supported by Barcelona.cat, Generalitat de Catalunya, and Ministerio de Vivienda y Agenda Urbana.
