Fusion for Energy (F4E) is the European Union’s Joint Undertaking for ITER and the Development of Fusion Energy. The organisation was created under the Euratom Treaty by a decision of the Council of the European Union in order to meet three objectives:

F4E is responsible for providing Europe’s contribution to ITER, the world’s largest scientific partnership that aims to demonstrate fusion as a v

iable and sustainable source of energy. ITER brings together seven parties that represent half of the world’s population – the EU, Russia, Japan, China, India, South Korea and the United States. F4E also supports fusion research and development initiatives through the Broader Approach Agreement, signed with Japan – a fusion energy partnership which will last for 10 years. Ultimately, F4E will contribute towards the construction of demonstration fusion reactors. F4E is established for a period of 35 years from 19 April 2007 and is located in Barcelona, Spain.

Fusion For Energyy meets Gauss Fusion 🤝

It was a pleasure to welcome senior management members from the European company to our Barcelona headquarters yesterday.

Gauss Fusion CEO Uwe Bau presented the firm’s objectives and capabilities, while F4E Director Marc Lachaise showcased the progress in flagship projects like ITER and the growth of the European supply chain.

Earlier this year, F4E and Gauss Fusion signed a collaboration agreement to support their respective projects through knowledge exchange in areas such as tritium breeding, superconducting magnets or advanced materials.

By working together, we can strengthen Europe’s technological edge and competitiveness in fusion.

The ITER site at a glance 🗺️

Nestled in the Provence countryside, a 42-hectare platform is home to the world’s largest fusion project.

At its center rises the iconic Tokamak Complex, where the reactor is being assembled.

But it doesn’t stand alone.

Dozens of facilities around it host the infrastructure to power and operate the experiment, from switchyards and heating systems to the control building or the vast cryoplant.

Fusion For Energy and its construction partners are proudly building this extraordinary site – captured in this 3D illustration.

Europe’s fusion supply chain knows no quiet months.

In collaboration with Criotec Impianti, we’ve delivered the cryolines for the Neutral Beam cryopumps.

This completes F4E’s commitments for the Front-End Cryopump Distribution System, a network of equipment designed to feed ultra-cold helium to the ITER cryopumps.

🙌It’s the final stretch of a long industrial journey made in Europe. Together with all our contractors, we’ve developed advanced cryogenic expertise and manufacturing capabilities for fusion.

Europe’s ITER Test Blanket Modules are moving forward ⏩

Fusion For Energy and ITER Organization experts held the preliminary design review meetings for both European TBM concepts.

The TBMs are first-of-a-kind prototypes of the breeding blanket, the technology that will enable future fusion power plants to regenerate their own fuel.

Their design is exceptionally complex, combining advanced materials and technologies and meeting the highest nuclear safety and quality standards.

Building on the expertise of EUROfusion laboratories, F4E is helping turn decades of research into engineering solutions — while retaining crucial know-how in Europe.

Two thirds in! 🧩

The Vacuum Vessel sector module 1 has been inserted in the Tokamak pit.

The operation was long but flawless: 30 hours of seamless teamwork involving more than 100 people across four shifts.

The massive sector module is made up of a Korean Vacuum Vessel sector, two Toroidal Field coils and thermal shields.

Six out of nine sectors are now in place: a sign of the positive momentum in ITER’s assembly.

A next-generation fusion tech mastered: a new fuel source for JT-60SA ✅

Fusion reactors like JT-60SA will be refuelled with hydrogen pellets, shot into the plasma at supersonic speeds using a centrifuge accelerator. 🌀

F4E partnered with Sener to deliver a new accelerator for JT-60SA, building on the expertise of various EUROfusion laboratories.

The 5-meter accelerator is now at the Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik IPP for integration and tests with other pellet launching components.
