The inauguration of the New Suez Canal is considered one of Egypt's greatest national achievements, completed in a record time. The project added a new navigation channel that strengthened the Suez Canal's position as one of the world's most important maritime waterways. It has enhanced navigation efficiency, reduced vessel transit time, and increased the Canal's capacity, thereby supporting global trade and contributing to economic development.
On the occasion of the anniversary of the inauguration of the New Suez Canal, the Suez National Museum is pleased to showcase one of its distinguished artifacts in celebration of this occasion.
Artifact: Zenobia Lighthouse Model
The Zenobia Lighthouse was the first man-made offshore lighthouse constructed on the seabed rocks at the entrance to the old Port of Suez channel in the Red Sea. It was firmly anchored with heavy steel chains and consisted of a circular chamber that emitted a revolving light from sunset until dawn. Ships bound for Suez could see its light from a distance of up to 12 nautical miles. The lighthouse was built to guide vessels approaching the low-lying shores and to identify their waiting positions in the harbor, preventing confusion among navigators while passing through the channel.
When it was first operated, the lighthouse stood approximately 42 meters high. Its beacon rotated and flashed every three seconds. It was located about three nautical miles from the old Ibrahim Port docks.
The lighthouse was named "Zenobia" after the small vessel that used to anchor beside it, transporting pilots and workers to and from the lighthouse, where they accessed it via its iron ladder.
A gold model of the lighthouse was commissioned by several shipping and navigation companies in Suez—including Ahmed Abboud Pasha, Port Said & Suez Coal Company, English Coaling Company, Mitchell Cotts, Worms, British Coaling Company, Suez Canal Company, Kamel Hamza (Member of Parliament for Suez), Hall Plate Company, Cory Company, Savon Company, William Stieldon Company, and Suez Navigation Company—to commemorate the opening of the 16th Industrial and Agricultural Exhibition in 1949.
The model bears the inscription: "Made by Economax, Jeweler, Cairo and Suez."
