Qalaat Al-Gindi (El Gundi Fortress) the Great Fortress of Saladin (Salah ad-Din) 1138-1193, Sultan of Egypt and Syria, founder of the Ayyubid Dynasty, the great 12th Century Muslim leader. The fortress sits on top of Ras Al Jundi hill (2100 feet above sea level). The fortress was built starting in 1165 to protect the caravan routes used by pilgrims from Africa going to Mecca, and was also meant to

be used to launch attacks on Jerusalem when completed – though Saladin had already captured Jerusalem (1187) prior to the forts completion.
