Red Sea Protectorates is a governmental organization under the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA), responsible for the conservation and sustainable management of the Red Sea’s marine and coastal ecosystems. Our main responsibilities include protecting marine biodiversity, coral reefs, marine life and critical habitats, while supporting sustainable tourism, environmental monitoring, law enforcement, public awareness, and the effective management of protected areas throughout the Egyptian Red Sea.

Sea urchins help maintain balance in coral reef ecosystems by grazing on macroalgae and keeping its growth in check. When urchin populations decline, such as the widespread decline of the long-spined sea urchin (Diadema antillarum) across the Caribbean in the 1980-1990s, fleshy macroalgae can quickly expand across a reef and outcompete corals for space to grow, shifting reefs to algae-dominated conditions.
