Around 2.1 billion people still lack access to safe drinking water, and 3.4 billion people lack access to safe sanitation. When water is unsafe or distant, sanitation and hygiene are not available at home or at school, women and girls often carry the heaviest burden - at the cost of their dignity, health, safety, education and economic participation.

As a low-lying delta and coastal nation, water management is part of the Netherlands’ identity. We share our expertise globally, while learning from partners, because water challenges transcend borders. In light of the , we remain committed to work together with Egypt to find lasting solutions to our shared growing water-related challenges.

📜💧Signing of Grant Agreement for Coastal Protection

Yesterday marked a special step in our collaboration with Egypt to strengthen and protect areas in Egypt💧

✍️ Minister Hani Sewilam وزارة الموارد المائية والري, Vice Minister of الصفحة الرسمية لوزارة الخارجية المصرية Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Samar Al-Ahdal and Ambassador Peter Mollema signed a grant agreement by Invest International supporting coastal protection through nature-based solutions in the Nile Delta.

📃This grant agreement follows a comprehensive sand survey that was completed over the course of last year. It paves the way for studying the feasibility of implementing nature-based solutions to protect the most vulnerable hotspots in the Delta and implement these solutions as pilot projects.

🇳🇱🤝🇪🇬 The signing builds on more than 50 years of water cooperation between Egypt and the Netherlands, a partnership grounded in trust, knowledge exchange, and practical solutions. Through Invest International, and in close cooperation with the Ministries of Water Resources and Irrigation, and Foreign Affairs, this long-standing partnership continues to support Egypt’s national priorities.

Change of Government 🇳🇱

On 23 February, the new government led by Minister-president Rob Jetten was sworn in by His Majesty King Willem-Alexander at Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague. 🇳🇱

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tom Berendsen, and Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Sjoerd Sjoerdsma, have also signed the official hand-over of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Netherlands continues to be a trustworthy partner within the European Union, United Nations, NATO and beyond.

On the occasion of the , we look back at the third edition of the Nile Parade, a vibrant initiative that brings together water sustainability, culture and community. Organized and funded in collaboration with environmental and cultural organizations EUNIC Egypt Verynile SADKO, the Nile Parade as well as the residents and fishermen of , the festival centers local knowledge, raises biodiversity awareness and sparks dialogue on climate resilience.
The Netherlands and Egypt have collaborated on water management issues for 50 years, a partnership that transforms lives, communities and economies.

As part of our CircuPack project, 3 hackathons took place in 3 different universities: Nile University, Ain Shams University
and Heliopolis University. Energetic students from diverse backgrounds worked together to find solutions for the in Egypt ♻️🌍♻️

Do you know that:
🌱Agriculture is central to Egypt’s economy and food security, yet packaging remains a major challenge, from waste and resource loss to environmental impact
📌Addressing this challenge requires more than one discipline. It calls for chemistry, engineering, business, and design to work together within a circular economy mindset.

That is why this hackathon matters. It brings diverse minds together to rethink systems, not just products.

Our Embassy, together with Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), had the pleasure of hosting an Energy Network Reception, bringing together partners from the public and private sectors, consultants, and advisors, all united by one shared motivation: advancing the green transition in both the Netherlands and Egypt.

🎤 Deputy Ambassador Eva Witteman opened the evening by underscoring the strategic importance of renewable energy and green hydrogen to 🇳🇱 the Netherlands and highlighted how 🇪🇬 Egypt is a priority partner in this transition.

💻 Rene Peters, Business Director of Energy Infrastructure, Energy & Materials Transition at TNO, delivered an insightful and interactive presentation on green hydrogen developments in the Netherlands and across Europe. His presentation provided realistic timelines on building a reliable, scalable, and cleaner energy system for Europe.

Building on the momentum of our previously organized the first RFNBO workshop certification in Egypt, the Netherlands stands ready to further expand cooperation with Egypt.

🇳🇱🤝🇪🇬 Through targeted capacity-building initiatives and technical exchange programs, we together aim to unlock sustainable investment opportunities and strengthen long-term strategic partnerships.

This week, 🇳🇱 Deputy Ambassador Eva Witteman visited the impressive premises of the هيئة الإسعاف المصرية - Egyptian Ambulance Organization, where World Health Organization Egypt delivered a Basic Emergency Care training to Egyptian paramedics and ambulance staff.

With a 2 million EUR donation to the WHO, the Government of the Netherlands contributes to the readiness of Egyptian healthcare facilities and professionals to receive medical evacuees from Gaza. The trainings that are conducted with Dutch financing aim to strengthen the capacity of paramedics to provide pre-hospital lifesaving care for acutely ill and injured patients evacuated from Gaza to Egypt for treatment. It is part of a broader series of trainings for more than 150 healthcare workers on Basic Life Support.

🤝This partnership with WHO reflects a shared commitment to improving access to medical care for patients from Gaza.

Through its contribution, the Netherlands supports the WHO’s work in Egypt to provide essential medications, medical supplies and equipment, as well as to conduct targeted capacity-building training courses for healthcare workers and to cover the costs of healthcare services for patients from Gaza in Egypt.

Stolen sculpture returned to Egypt

Today marks an important moment in international cooperation on cultural heritage protection. A stolen stone sculpture, dating back approximately 3,500 years and depicting a high-ranking official from the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose III, was formally handed over by the Netherlands to the Egyptian Ambassador in The Hague سفارة جمهورية مصر العربية في لاهاي Egyptische Ambassade in Den Haag

This return follows an extensive investigation, which established that the object had been looted from an archaeological site in the Egyptian region of Luxor and unlawfully exported. The formal transfer ceremony underscores the importance of collaboration between states, museums, art fairs, dealers, collectors, and experts in safeguarding cultural heritage and ensuring rightful provenance.

The Netherlands’ Minister of Education, Culture and Science, Gouke Moes emphasized during the handover that the sculpture “does not belong here, and certainly not on the art market, it belongs in Egypt.” The Ceremony was also attended by Ambassador of the Netherlands to Egypt Peter Mollema.

Last week, Ambassador Peter Mollema met with Mr. Waleid Gamal El-Dien, Chairman of the المنطقة الاقتصادية لقناة السويس SCZONE to discuss opportunities for cooperation in renewable energy and green hydrogen.

This fruitful meeting reflects the Netherlands’ interest in exploring strategic cooperation and investment opportunities in renewable energy, green hydrogen and sustainable development, particularly in the context of Egypt’s momentum in the green transition agenda.
