IEEE RAS Zagazig Student Chapter

IEEE RAS Zagazig Student Chapter Official Zagazig University IEEE Robotics & Automation Society student chapter.

The IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) is a professional society of the IEEE that provides publications, conferences, community networking, and many other benefits to members within the fields of Robotics and Automation. The Society strives to advance innovation, education, and fundamental and applied research in robotics and automation. Robotics focuses on systems incorporating sensors an

d actuators that operate autonomously or semi-autonomously in cooperation with humans. Robotics research emphasizes intelligence and adaptability to cope with unstructured environments. Automation research emphasizes efficiency, productivity, quality, and reliability, focusing on systems that operate autonomously, often in structured environments over extended periods, and on the explicit structuring of such environments. RAS membership enables you to stay current within your chosen technology profession, to keep in touch with your peers, and to invest in your career and profession. The chapterโ€™s goal is to provide the students with enough knowledge and skills in robotics and automation fields, which are not covered in the university. It aims to prepare effective and professional teams to participate in international competitions. Moreover, on the long term, the chapter will have students who can make research and contribute in the new technology of this field.

What After C++?

All of us have used C++.
It's fast, efficient, and everywhere โ€” from games to robots.
But let's be honest... it's complicated, old, and hard to maintain.

So, what's next?

Carbon Language โ€” Googleโ€™s modern approach to what comes after C++.

Carbon is an experimental programming language developed by Google as a successor to C++, aiming to improve performance and developer experience while maintaining interoperability with existing C++ codebases.

Why Carbon?
Imagine writing code that's just as fast as C++, but with:
-Clean and modern syntax
-Better and safer memory control
-Familiar feel for C++ developers
-Easy integration into existing projects
-Fully open-source and community-driven
-Seamless interoperability with existing C++ code
Thatโ€™s what Carbon is made for.

As someone passionate about robotics, embedded systems, and mechatronics, Iโ€™m really excited about what Carbon could bring to the future of low-level programming and how can it help in Robotics and Automation?

One of the best places where Carbon can really help is robotics and automation. These systems need to be fast, reliable, and able to work all the time without errors.

Carbon helps with that by making the code easier to write and understand, while also keeping it safe and efficient. This is important when you're building things like robots or machines that need to move or make decisions quickly.
Also, because Carbon works well with C++, we can still use our old code and slowly move to Carbon without starting from zero. That makes it a great option for improving robots and automation systems step by step.

For students and engineers working in mechatronics or embedded systems, Carbon could make it easier to build smarter and safer machines in the future.

0 and 1? Why not both?
Introducing Majorana 1 the quantum leap weโ€™ve all been waiting for. ๐Ÿง

In traditional computers, a bit can only exist in one state at a time either 0 or 1. So, with two bits, we can represent four different values: 0, 1, 2, or 3.
However, quantum computers use qubits, which donโ€™t have to be in just one state. A qubit can be in a combination of both 0 and 1 at the same time, thanks to a property called superposition.

This is exactly what Microsoft has introduced: the worldโ€™s first quantum chip, named Majorana 1, powered by a revolutionary Topological Core Architecture designed to solve complex problems significantly faster than classical computers. โš™

โ€œWe took a step back and said, โ€˜OK, letโ€™s invent the transistor for the quantum age. What properties does it need to have?โ€™โ€ โ€“ Chetan Nayak, Microsoft Technical Fellow

Majorana 1 is built using the worldโ€™s first topoconductor a material that creates a new state of matter, neither solid, liquid, nor gas, but a topological state.
This enables the creation of fast, compact, and digitally controlled qubits and the chip can host up to 1 million qubits.

To simplify: Imagine a maze. A classical computer explores one path at a time, like a single mouse. But a quantum computer can explore all paths simultaneously like sending millions of mice through the maze at once.

Majorana 1 is more than just a chip. Itโ€™s a foundational step toward real-world quantum impact.

RAS is truly a game changer.๐Ÿ’ช

Always evolving and constantly seeking new challenges. A few months ago, RAS participated in the Robotiva a true opportunity to demonstrate the teamโ€™s strength and skill.๐Ÿงก
We proudly claimed two first places:

The first place: SOUL
โ€ขMoataz Rafeq Hamdy Mousa
โ€ขOmar Ayman Mohamed Saed

The second place: Intellibots
โ€ขAbdelrahman Ahmed El-Ghandour
โ€ขMohamed Gamal El-Sayed
โ€ขAbdelrahman Mohamed Abdellateef
โ€ขAhmed Ibrahim Ali Ali

The competition challenged participating members to design and build a robot capable of three functionalities: line following, obstacle avoidance, and a pick & place challenge using a robotic arm.
Our talented RAS members overcame electrical, mechanical, and programming challenges, managed costs smartly, and flexed their entrepreneurial muscles with solid business models. But thatโ€™s RAS, we grow through every challenge.
The impact went beyond the winners; everyone gained experience and shared it with the team.
This growth was clear at The Rockies Final Competition, where Robotivaโ€™s influence shined through.

And this? It wasnโ€™t the end it's just the beginning.โšก

No wires. More power. โšก
Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology is transforming automotive, mobile, and Industrial IoT experiences through secure ranging and precision sensing. The latest innovation in this field is a new UWB wireless system that collects data from batteries. This technology could help boost the range of electric vehicles while simplifying their development and assembly. ๐Ÿš—

Electric vehicles monitor battery voltage and temperature to prevent failures or safety hazards. Currently, EVs use complex wiring harnesses to collect this data, which reduces battery space and requires manual assembly by skilled workers. Replacing these wiring harnesses with wireless systems could increase the energy capacity of battery packs and simplify the assembly processโ€”leading to higher production efficiency and reduced risks of human error.

Until now, wireless battery management technology was narrowband and faced numerous challenges in EV environments.

NXP has developed the first ultra-wideband wireless battery management system for electric vehicles. It encodes data in low-energy wireless pulses across a 500-megahertz range, enabling short-range, high-bandwidth communication.

UWB pulses help the system detect and handle reflected signals. The greater a signalโ€™s bandwidth, the shorter its possible duration. NXPโ€™s system uses 2-nanosecond pulses, allowing it to precisely measure signal timing and filter out reflections. As a result, it transmits data four times faster than narrowband wireless battery systems.

Thanks to its ultra-wideband nature, the system also avoids interference from other in-vehicle systems, reducing software complexity and development time. ๐Ÿง

NXP says the new system will be available for car manufacturers to evaluate and develop starting in the second quarter of 2025.

Follow us to stay powered by innovation! ๐Ÿงก
