La Hesperia Reserve

La Hesperia is a nature reserve located in the western range of the Andes at an altitude of 1100 – 2040 meters above sea level.

With an area of 814 hectares, it is located in the center of the Rio Toachi-Chiriboga IBA (Important Bird Area, declared by Bird Life International and Conservation International) and it is part of twoimportant bioregions: The Tropical Andes and the Choco Darien – Western Ecuador, considered within the top five biodiversity hotspots on earth. The station works in natural conservation, combating de

forestation, protecting existing forest, restoring degraded areas and searching for sustainable activities that enable us to support the reserve and to offer a better way of life for the local community as well as those who work and live at the reserve. La Hesperia encompasses three types of forest: pre-montane evergreen, low montane and high montane (cloud forest). The work that we do at La Hesperia is extremely important in terms of preserving the biodiversity of the cloud forest and protecting local watersheds. Our work focuses on protecting existing forests through reforestation, monitoring the impact of human activity and conducting environmental education. La Hesperia is also striving to become a model of integrated farming where agricultural practices complement our primary objective of preserving the natural forest. Combining conservation and agriculture will enable us to sustain the reserve and promote economic activities that are environmentally friendly and beneficial for the local inhabitants. We are open to cooperation agreements with conservation and social institutions and are a part of the Jatun Sacha Foundation and members of the Aves & Conservación NGO (Ecuadorian partner of Bird Life International) for the better achievement of our goals. La Hesperia’s main goals are:

• Maintaining the reserve as an IBA (Important Bird
Area)
• Working towards sustainable development
• Creating programs to foster community development
• Restoring degraded areas within and outside the
reserve
• Educating the public about conservation and ecology
• Conducting research
• Sharing our experiences with nature enthusiasts,
local communities and volunteers.

We’re still raising funds to support the children from the rural school near the reserve. This initiative helps provide educational activities, meaningful learning experiences, and also basic equipment for sports, as they currently don’t have what they need to practice.

So far, we’ve raised $1,400 out of our $3,700 goal.

This photo was taken during one of their visits, when Michelle shared both an educational and sports activity with the children here at the reserve. Moments like these remind us why this support matters.

Seguimos recaudando fondos para apoyar a los niños de la escuelita rural cerca de la reserva. Esta iniciativa ayuda a brindar actividades educativas, experiencias de aprendizaje significativas y también equipamiento básico para deporte, ya que actualmente no cuentan con lo necesario para practicar.

Connecting children with nature and sport

We are launching a small project to support 35 children from a rural school near La Hesperia Cloud Forest Reserve through a program that combines environmental education and sports.

The program includes 6 educational field trips to the cloud forest with guided nature activities and outdoor learning, plus sports equipment for the school to help the kids stay active and build teamwork throughout the school year.

🎯 Fundraising goal: $3,750
💚 Raised so far: $730
