Its viernes de voluntarios, and this point of view was sure a special one! 🐆

This is the moment our researcher, Alex, discovered quite the surprise while reviewing his camera trap footage 🫢🎞️

We were so thrilled to support Alex as he conducted his own independent research at AmaZOOnico, studying the effects of human disturbance on biodiversity in the area. Using camera traps, Alex was able to capture a glimpse into the wildlife living around us 🌿📸

Meet amaZOOnico’s newest rescues: Bruno & Bo 🐾

🚨 These baby tayras were confiscated from illegal wildlife traffickers by the Ministry of Environment in Sucumbios, Ecuador and transferred to our rehabilitation center

🩺 After a medical check-up from our veterinary staff, it was observed that Bo has a fungal infection on one paw but that otherwise, both pups were relatively healthy. Our animal care team estimates that they are approximately one month old.

🍼 Since being brought to amaZOOnico, these two are being syringe fed every 4-hours. As soon as they can eat independently, they will be transitioned to solid foods so that we can minimize human interactions.

🌱While they are growing bigger and stronger every day. they have a long journey ahead of them before they can be released back to the wild. They are currently sleeping in the clinic with a heating pad and stuffed surrogate mama, and won’t get moved into an outdoor enclosure until they are a little bit bigger.

Currently, ~70% of all primate species are listed by the IUCN as threatened and 94% have declining populations.
2& The trafficking of these species have greatly exacerbated conservation problems worldwide through unsustainable harvesting, specifically for unethical tourism and the pet trade.

⚠️ The most important thing YOU can do as a tourist is to never support places that allow close interactions with primates including feeding, touching, or taking close photos of.

Today’s Wild Wednesday features the growing friendship blossoming between our two permanent resident tayras, Emma 💕 and Igu 🐾

Tayras are often described as solitary animals, but the reality is that their social lives are still not fully understood. There is currently a lot of scientific investigation underway, and camera trap studies are showing us that they may be more social than previously thought 🧐

A recent enclosure upgrade has given them the best of both worlds: plenty of space to move around and enjoy their independence, while also giving them the choice to interact when they both feel like socializing. And lately, we’ve been loving watching their relationship blossom! 🌸

Providing animals with the space and choice to express their natural behaviors allows them to show us just how complex their social lives can be ✨

Leonora (🇩🇪) and Kaja (🇩🇪) thank you for dedicating an entire year of your life to us. Your support and love for the people and the animals at our rescue center has been so important to us, and we can’t imagine what the last year would’ve looked like without you.

Andrew (🇺🇸) you have left such an impact on the developing spider monkey program, and have led the pre-release study with such positive energy and dependendable dilligince. We cannot wait to release the little troop in the coming weeks🐒

Emiel (🇩🇪) thank you for dropping in when we needed you most, for taking tons of wonderful content, and for always helping with the heavy lifting, for an entire year! We wish you all the best in your future 🎥
